DeLAND, Fla. – A tough two-game road trip begins on Thursday night for University of North Florida women's basketball as the Ospreys return to the road at defending Atlantic Sun Tournament Champion Stetson. Tip is set for 7 p.m., from the Edmunds Center.
Â
"This weekend will be a great challenge for our team," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast are two of the top teams in our league and we have to be firing on all cylinders to get out desired outcome. We have made good strides as a team and are looking to continue our progress.
Â
The Ospreys have spent most of January on the road, only having three home games during the month. UNF play two of those games last week with Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb visiting UNF Arena. The Ospreys come off a 78-66 win over Lipscomb on Saturday for their first Atlantic Sun win of the season. Destinee Smith led a quartet of Ospreys with 23 points against the Lady Bisons. It was the second-straight game in which a UNF player registered 20-or-more points. Ki Conner put up 20 against Northern Kentucky last Thursday.
Â
Heading into Thursday with a nine-game home winning streak, Stetson has the Atlantic Sun's top offenses and leads the conference in scoring (79.1 points per game), scoring margin (+9.6), field goal percentage (.457), three-point field goal percentage (.339), rebound offense (43.8 per game) and assists (15.1 per game). Additionally, the Hatters are the conference's top field goal percentage defense team, holding opponents to .366 field goal percentage. UNF is second in the A-Sun in field goal percentage defense (.385). Five Hatters average double-digit points with Sasha Sims having an A-Sun leading 17.9 points per game. Amber Porter and Cherrisse Burris each average 7.9 and 7.5 rebounds per game. Porter also has 58 blocks on the season.
Â
The series between UNF and Stetson is tied at 8-8. Last year's series was split with each team winning on its home court. Stetson took a 71-57 win on Jan. 5 at the Edmunds Center, while UNF posted a 56-52 win at UNF Arena.Â
