North Florida Baseball Hosts FGCU in Weekend Series to Wrap Up Home Schedule

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team closes out its home schedule with a pivotal weekend series against Florida Gulf Coast at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium this weekend. Friday's game is slated for 6:00 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday will each be at 1:00 p.m.
Saturday's game will be Senior Day and the Ospreys' nine seniors – Nick Allbritton, Corey Bass, Trey Ferrano, Paul Karmeris, Tommy Organ, Michael Renner, Marshal Rosenberger, Kyle Westwood and Joe Wielbruda – will all be honored prior to the game.
There will be a baseball alumni event during Saturday's game in the Osprey Nest. Any baseball alumni interested in attending the event should contact Antonio Franzese (2006-09) at Antonio.f.franzese@gmail.com.
Sunday is Mother's Day and admission for all mothers is FREE. In addition, the mothers of the Osprey baseball players will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 34-14 overall record, including a 15-6 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Ospreys are tied for first in the A-Sun with Mercer and both teams have six regular season conference games to play.
Heading into the weekend, Florida Gulf Coast is 32-16 overall and 14-7 in the league. The Eagles are in third place in the A-Sun heading into the final two weekends of play, just one game back of North Florida and Mercer.
The Ospreys boast a 23-7 overall record at home, as UNF heads into the final home weekend of the season. The Eagles are 12-7 in true away games and 14-8 in games away from Sessions Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla.
Florida Gulf Coast holds a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series. The Ospreys opened the rivalry with a pair of victories before dropping the next eight meetings. North Florida broke the losing streak with a 13-2 victory over then No. 28 FGCU in the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn. The Eagles have won the last two series against the Ospreys. North Florida has scored 10 or more runs in four of the five victories over Florida Gulf Coast in the series.
North Florida dropped its first A-Sun Conference weekend series of the year last weekend to Stetson on the road. The Ospreys fell in the first two games, but posted a 3-0 shutout in the final game to clinch a spot in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
In the final game of the series, the Ospreys were led on the mound by Renner's complete game performance. The senior did not allow a run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of play. The southpaw did not walk a batter and struck out five on the day. Renner recorded three 1-2-3 innings, punctuating a pair of them with back-to-back strikeouts, including back-to-back Ks to end the game.
Offensively, the Ospreys boast a team batting average of .322 with all nine everyday starters hitting over .300. The trio of Wielbruda (.362), Ryan Roberson (.355) and P. Karmeris (.352) are all batting above .350 on the season.
On the mound, North Florida is led by three senior starters – Organ, Allbritton and Renner. The trio have combined for 18 victories and power a pitching staff that holds a combined 3.10 earned run average.

Extending its winning streak to an A-Sun season-best 10-straight games, the Eagles took both games of a non-conference doubleheader with Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla. on Wednesday, defeating the Rattlers 13-3, 13-4.
In last weekend's league series sweep of Jacksonville, the Eagles hit a combined .366 with a .516 slugging and .465 on-base percentage, scoring 25 runs and collecting 23 RBI. Collecting 12 total bases over the three games, Michael Suchy held a .462 average (6-for-13) while leading the team with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. Suchy's effort in the trio of A-Sun games combined with a .444 average (4-for-9) in the pair of games last Wednesday with FIU, which included a home run, a pair of RBI and three runs scored, earned the second-year player his first career A-Sun Player of the Week honor.
