MILTON, Ga. – The No. 14-seed University of North Florida men's golf team is tied for 11th place following a second round 282 (+2) on Wednesday in the 2013 NCAA Championship at Capital City Club – Crabapple Course.
With a 36-hole total of 563 (+3), the Ospreys are just three strokes shy of the coveted eighth spot, which would allow UNF to advance to match play in the NCAA Championship event.
Senior Sean Dale paced the Ospreys on day two firing a one-under 69 to finish the day tied for 30th at 139 (-1). Sophomores MJ Maguire and Joey Petronio along with senior Kevin Phelan each posted matching rounds of one-over 71 for UNF. Maguire is tied for 42nd at 141 (+1), Petronio is tied for 72nd at 143 (+3) and Phelan is tied for 113th at 146 (+6).
Redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock shot a 76 (+6) and ranks tied for 97th at 145 (+5) to round out the UNF lineup.
The Ospreys appeared to have things rolling early in Wednesday's round having moved to 5-under midway through the front nine, but a tough stretch near the turn including a collective 5-over score on the ninth hole slowed the momentum. UNF kept things steady over the back nine to end the morning wave in a tie for 10th.
“We had another solid round today but still looking for that great round,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We are in a good position for tomorrow's final round. If we can put together a strong showing we have a chance to do something special. The guys need to rest up and come out focused tomorrow.”
Tournament host Georgia Tech moved to the top of the 30-team leaderboard at 548 (-12), one shot ahead of top-ranked California at 549. Texas is third at 550 with Alabama (551), Arkansas (557), Illinois (557), Arizona State (558) and Texas A&M (560) filling out the current top eight positions.
UCF sits in ninth at 561 (+1) followed by Oklahoma (562), UNF and Tennessee (563), Washington (564), Florida State (564), TCU (566), New Mexico (566), LSU (567), Coastal Carolina (568), Georgia (569), USC (569), UCLA (570), UNLV (570), Auburn (571), Texas Tech (571), Oklahoma State (572), Florida (574), Kent State (575), Ball State (579), St. Mary's (581) and South Carolina (582).
Day one individual leader Jon Rahm of Arizona State (133/-7) continues to hold a slim one-shot advantage over UCF's Greg Eason and Arkansas Nicolas Echavarria in individual medalist competition.
Stroke play concludes with a final round Thursday on the par 70, 7,013-yard layout at Capital City Club. The top eight teams following the 54 holes of play advance to the seeded match play portion of the NCAA Championship beginning on Friday.
The Ospreys will tee off in the final round beginning at 12 p.m. from tee No. 10 along with Oklahoma and Tennessee.
