MILTON, Ga. – The No. 14-seed University of North Florida men's golf team finished 18th Thursday after a rollercoaster-like final round in the 2013 NCAA Championship at Capital City Club – Crabapple Course.
The Ospreys concluded the stroke play portion of the national championship event with a 54-hole total of 849 (+9) including a final day score of 286 (+6). UNF fell just six shots shy of the score needed to finish in the top eight and advance to the match play portion of the championship.
Senior Sean Dale was the squad's top finisher earning a tie for 32nd in his final collegiate event. Dale posted a final round 71 (+1) finishing with a three-round total of even-par 210. Redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock carded the team's best round Thursday shooting an even par 70 en route to a tie for 85th at 215 (+5).
Sophomore MJ Maguire matched Hancock's total of 215 (T-85th) with senior Kevin Phelan (T-103/217) and sophomore Joey Petronio (T-116/219) rounding out the Osprey lineup. Phelan, Maguire and Petronio posted final rounds of 71, 74, 76, respectively.
“This was a tough way to finish, but I am extremely proud of the season we had,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We had our opportunities today but it just didn't go our way. These guys continued to fight all day just like we've done all year. We won three tournaments including, won a second straight Atlantic Sun Championship and captured an NCAA Regional title. We are definitely going to miss our seniors, Kevin (Phelan) and Sean (Dale), who have raised the bar for not only our golf program but also all athletic teams at UNF.”
Opening play on the back nine in the final round, UNF got off to a fast start moving to 5-under on the day through the first five holes. Three different players recorded birdies in the stretch and Hancock added an eagle draining a 20-foot putt after reaching the green at the par-5 12th in two shots.
North Florida then struggled a bit, playing the next seven holes in a collective 10-over par, before rallying with five birdies on the next three holes to pull within a single shot of the cut line with three holes remaining. Unfortunately, the Ospreys would close the round with another tough scoring stretch to fall out of contention for match play.
Top-ranked California finished with a three-day total of 824 (-16) to lead the group of teams advancing to match play. Georgia Tech, the event host, advances as the second seed after posting an 830 followed by Alabama and Texas in a tie at 833. The Longhorns and Tide faced each other in the final match of last year's championship event.
Illinois earned the fifth spot with a score of 835. Four teams tied for the final three spots at 842 with New Mexico, UNLV and Arizona State edging Texas A&M in a playoff.
Cal's Max Homa captured the individual national championship with a three-round total of 201 (-9).
Seeded match play to determine the team title begins Friday at 10 a.m. with California meeting Arizona State. Other matches feature Georgia Tech versus UNLV, Alabama against New Mexico and Texas versus Illinois.
Semifinal matches are scheduled for Saturday with the championship match slated for Sunday.
