GULF SHORES, Ala. – The North Florida Sand Volleyball team begins play at the AVCA Sand Volleyball National Championship competition Friday against Southern California at 9 a.m. (CT).
The Ospreys (16-3) are the No. 5 seed in the six team field and earned their invitation to the championship by claiming their second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. USC is the No. 4 seed after posting a 12-5 dual match mark this season.
“We are really excited to be one of the last six teams competing for the AVCA National Championship,” said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick, the two-time defending A-Sun Coach of the Year. “Last year we took a pair to the championships (Dagnija Medina/Emily Strack) and those two vowed to bring the whole team this year to share in this incredible experience at an amazingly beautiful location in Gulf Shores. We are looking forward to playing some unbelievably talented squads starting with USC on Friday morning.”
With a win against USC, UNF would advance to a Friday match against top-seeded and defending national champion Pepperdine at 12 p.m. (CT). A loss sends the Ospreys to an elimination match at 4 p.m. (CT) against the loser between No. 2 Long Beach State and Florida State/UL-Monroe winner.
The semifinal matches are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. with the national championship match set for 3:30 p.m.
UNF's top duo (Dagnija Medina/Anna Budinska) have already qualified for Sunday's 16-team Pairs Championship while the Osprey tandem of Carolyn Jenkins/Cari Whitmire will have a chance to also advance to the pairs field based on their results in Friday-Saturday competition.
