GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The North Florida Sand Volleyball team dropped a pair of tough matches to Southern California (4-1) and Florida State (5-0) on the opening day of the 2013 AVCA Sand Volleyball National Championship.
The Ospreys (16-5), who were eliminated from the team competition following their loss to FSU, conclude a historic season that included a second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference championship while also becoming the first league team to participate in the National Championship event.
In the day's opening match, the No. 4 seeded USC Trojans earned victories at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 positions while the No. 5 seeded Ospreys collected a three-game win by the No. 2 pairing of Carolyn Jenkins/Cari Whitmire. The UNF duo posted a 21-18 decision in game one then dropped a tight 21-19 decision in game two before outlasting the USC pair, 15-12, in the deciding game.
Facing No. 3 seed Florida State in an elimination match, the Ospreys battled throughout all five pairings but were unable to claim a win against the Seminoles. UNF's tandem of Emily Strack and Anna Wagner did force a three-game thiller at the No. 3 position.
On Saturday, top-seeded Pepperdine meets Florida State at 11 a.m. (CT) in one semifinal while No. 2 seed Long Beach State faces USC at Noon in the other. The National Championship match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CT).
North Florida now turns its attention to Sunday's Pairs National Championship. UNF's top-ranked duo of Dagnija Medina/Anna Budinska have already qualified for the 16-team field and Jenkins/Whitmire can join them by winning a Saturday play-in match.
