TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Bolstered by a program record performance, the No. 18 North Florida men's golf team holds a four-stroke lead after opening round play of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Golden Eagle Country Club.
The Ospreys fired a first round 272 (-16) over the par 72, 6,965-yard layout at GECC. The total marked the second lowest single round total in program history and was also the second best team score in relation to par. UNF has twice carded rounds of 271 including the first round of last year's NCAA Regional in Athens, Ga., while the Ospreys posted a 17-under (271) in second round action at the 2012 Gary Koch Invitational.
In addition, UNF set a new Atlantic Sun Conference mark for lowest round at an NCAA Regional.
“It feels great to get off to such a strong start,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “I thought the guys made smarts shots and capitalized on their opportunities to make birdies. We are a really good team when our top three guys (Sean Dale, Kevin Phelan, MJ Maguire) play well and all three of them had solid rounds today. I thought MJ played nearly flawless and had a pretty simple round. There is still a lot of golf remaining and there are definitely some strong teams in this field. We just have to keep focused and continue to play smart and patient. We have put ourselves in a good position.”
Sophomore standout MJ Maguire carded a career best 7-under 65 to pace a quartet of Ospreys with rounds under par on day one. Maguire, who captured the Atlantic Sun Conference medalist title in his last outing, played bogey free Thursday posting five birdies and an eagle en route to his near program record score. Maguire currently leads the individual medalist competition by a stroke over Florida State's Chase Seiffert and Georgia Tech's Anders Albertson.
“I felt pretty good about today's round,” said Maguire. “I've probably played and practiced more recently and I feel like all that work is paying off. I tried to keep things pretty simple today and was able to hit a bunch of fairways and greens. I was able to leave myself below the hole most of the time on the greens, and kept myself in good positions on the course.”
Joining Maguire in the Top 10 is senior Kevin Phelan, tied for 6th after a first round 68 (-3). Fellow senior Sean Dale shot a 2-under 69 and is tied for 14th, while redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock matched a career best with a round of 70 (-1) to rank tied for 20th. Sophomore Joey Petronio rounded out the Osprey lineup with a one-over 73 (T-41st).
Top-seeded Washington is four strokes behind UNF at 276 with Florida State (277), Oregon (280), Georgia Tech (280) and South Florida (280) filling out the Top Five. Wake Forest and Oklahoma are tied for seventh at 284 followed by North Carolina State (289), Oregon State (292), Iowa (299), San Diego (299) and Loyola, Md. (301).
North Florida continues play at the NCAA Regional Friday with tee times beginning at 9:15 a.m. off of Tee No. 1. The Ospreys will be paired with Washington and FSU in round two play.
