TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With three golfers ranked among the Top 10 individuals, the No. 18 University of North Florida men's golf team maintained its lead after second round play Friday of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Golden Eagle Country Club.
The Ospreys followed an opening round 272 (-16) with an 11-under 277 for a 36-hole total of 549 (-27). The total marks the lowest score for two rounds in NCAA Regional play since the University of Georgia posted a 32-under total at the 2008 East Regional.
Sophomore MJ Maguire, the Atlantic Sun Conference medalist, continues to lead the individual field following a round of 68 (-4) on Friday. Maguire sits atop the standings with a 133 (-11) total, leading Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan and Florida State's Chase Seiffert by one shot.
Maguire's senior teammates Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale matched round two performance carding scores of 68 as well. Phelan is currently tied for sixth at 136 (-8), while Dale is tied for 10th at 137 (-7). Sophomore Joey Petronio posted a second consecutive 73 (+1), rebounding from a tough start to birdie four of his final eight holes, while redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock posted a 79 (+7) to round out the Osprey lineup. Petronio and Hancock are tied for 39th and 55th, respectively.
“We didn't have the start we were looking for today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “However, the guys stuck to the game plan and stayed focused which allowed us to finish extremely well. This was definitely a total team effort today and it will take another one tomorrow for us to do something special. We are excited about the position we are in headed to the final round.”
As a team, the Ospreys collected 10 birdies with just two bogeys over the final four holes of the second round. In addition to Petronio's solid finish, Dale and Maguire each birdied three of the final four holes. Maguire had his first and only bogey of the tournament on the second hole of the day before finishing with five birdies.
Top-seeded Washington trimmed their deficit to two shots but still trail UNF with a total of 551. Tournament host Florida State is third at 553 followed by Oregon (562), Georgia Tech (564), South Florida (564), Oklahoma (565), Oregon State (577), Wake Forest (580), North Carolina State (582), Iowa (589), San Diego (594) and Loyola (Md.) at 601.
