Ospreys Return Home for Midweek Game Against Georgia Southern

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns home to Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium for a midweek game against Georgia Southern. First pitch between the Ospreys and Eagles is slated for 6:00 p.m. After the weekend, the Ospreys currently have 999 wins in school history and will look for their 1,000th victory on Tuesday night.
The game is the final Toss It Back Tuesday of the season. Live stats, live video and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will be available throughout the game.
North Florida enters the game 32-12 overall after a three-game sweep of crosstown rival Jacksonville. The Ospreys have five games in a row and 11 of the last 12 games they have played. UNF is 22-7 at Harmon Stadium and will be looking for victory No. 1,000 on Tuesday night.
Georgia Southern is 23-20 on the season after winning a three-game series with Elon over the weekend. Prior to the Elon series, the Eagles had dropped eight in a row, including a pair of losses to Atlantic Sun Conference teams, Mercer and Kennesaw State. GSU enters the game with a 9-9 record away from Statesboro, Ga.
The all-time series between North Florida and Georgia Southern is tied at 7-7. The Ospreys are 4-2 at Harmon Stadium and 3-5 at J.I. Clements Stadium. Last season, UNF and GSU met on the diamond four times with the Ospreys claiming the series three games to one.
The series started on Feb. 4, 2006 with a 7-2 victory by North Florida. The Eagles won the next five meetings before the Ospreys posted a 14-3 win on March 2, 2010. North Florida won six of the last eight meetings against Georgia Southern, including four consecutive home games against GSU.
North Florida and Georgia Southern will meet one other time this season as the Ospreys travel to Statesboro, Ga. for a midweek game on Tuesday, May 14 at J.I. Clements Stadium. First pitch for the second game in the series is slated for 6:00 p.m.
North Florida began playing baseball in 1988 under then-head coach Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes directed the team from NAIA to Division II to full Division I membership amassing 909 wins along the way. Smoke Laval took over for Rhodes in 2011 and has won 90 games so far in his first three seasons (27 wins in 2011; 31 wins in 2012; 32 wins in 2013), one win shy of the 1,000-win milestone.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Eagles snapped an eight-game losing streak on Friday and went on to win their first weekend series since March 22-24 against Davidson. Their last win before the start of the losing streak came at Charleston Southern on April 9th.
Georgia Southern will play Charleston Southern on Wednesday in Statesboro, Ga. The Eagles defeated the Buccaneers 3-2 on April 9 in Charleston, S.C. The Ospreys played the Bucs earlier this season, claiming a pair of victories (W, 10-5; W, 9-1) the first weekend of March.
