JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team travels across town for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with rival Jacksonville University this weekend at John Sessions Stadium. The Ospreys (29-12, 11-4 A-Sun) and Dolphins (14-26, 7-8 A-Sun) have met 45 times in school history heading into the weekend.
All three games can be heard on 1010 XL in the Jacksonville area or you can listen online at www.1010xl.com. The Voice of the Ospreys, Robert Harper, will have all of the play-by-play. Live stats and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will also be available throughout the weekend.
Jacksonville holds the lead in the all-time series with a 29-16 record against North Florida. The Ospreys are 7-11 at Sessions Stadium. Forty-four of the 45 games in the series have taken place in Jacksonville at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium, John Sessions Stadium or the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville with the lone game out of the River City coming in 2010 at the A-Sun Championships at Ken Dugan Field in Nashville, Tenn.
The Ospreys and Dolphins have played every season since 1988, but did not play three-game series until UNF joined the Atlantic Sun Conference during the 2005-06 season as the Osprey began the transition to Division I.
Since turning DI in 2006, North Florida is 10-12 against Jacksonville. North Florida won the series against Jacksonville last season; taking 2-of-3 games and the Ospreys have now won three of the last four meetings with the Dolphins. UNF has never swept JU in a three-game series.
Despite a stellar record at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium, North Florida has a better winning percentage against Jacksonville on the road. The Ospreys have won seven games at both Harmon and Sessions Stadiums, but UNF has played five less games at Sessions. North Florida's first victory in the series came at Session Stadium back in 1991. The Ospreys posted a 3-1 victory to earn their first win in the rivalry.
The Ospreys enter the weekend atop the A-Sun standings. With four weeks remaining in the regular season, North Florida will look to try to secure a spot in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Jacksonville enters the weekend seventh in the latest conference standings. This season the A-Sun will take eight teams to the double-elimination tournament in Deland, Fla.
The weekend is also important for the SunTrust River City Rumble standings. The Ospreys currently lead in the battle for the Old Wooden Barrel, 8.5-6.5. After establishing the River City Rumble in 2006, North Florida won its first barrel in 2007 (W, 11-9) and retained the barrel as the two teams tied 10-10 in 2008. The Dolphins won the next three years, before the Ospreys reclaimed the Old Wooden Barrel, winning 13-7 last season.
Baseball, softball – which also plays Jacksonville this weekend – and women's outdoor track & field are the final three sports to compete against the Dolphins for River City Rumble points. North Florida needs three of the remaining seven points to retain the Old Wooden Barrel.

North Florida head coach Smoke Laval was a member of the JU Dolphins in 1976 and 1977. In January of 2011, Laval's 1976 baseball team was also honored for being the most successful group in Jacksonville University baseball history with a 45-14 overall record and a No. 9 national ranking. The team donated a shadow box with an autographed baseball and bat by the team and a jersey that will hang in the JU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Scouting the Opposition:
Jacksonville enters the weekend having lost three consecutive games. The Dolphins fell in the final two games on the road to Northern Kentucky before dropping a decision to No. 9 Florida State at home. Prior to the three-game skid, the Dolphins were on a three-game winning streak, claiming a pair of wins against Kennesaw State and a victory against NKU.
