Final Bracket (pdf)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Sand Volleyball team captured its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference championship Sunday by sweeping a pair of matches against Stetson at Jacksonville's Dolphin Sand Volleyball Courts.
The Ospreys (16-3), who finished the regular season with an undefeated 8-0 A-Sun record, remained unblemished after posting three wins in the championship tournament. UNF posted 4-1 and 3-2 decisions against the Hatters to secure the conference crown. The championship victory also secures the Ospreys an automatic qualification for the upcoming AVCA National Sand Championships.
“I am extremely proud of the effort and determination shown by our team,” said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. “We were the hunted team in the conference this season and all year long the girls just stayed focused and committed to our plan. Today we played some very exciting matches and were able to make the plays down the stretch to earn this championship. We are really excited and looking forward to participating in the AVCA National Championship.”
In the day's first match, UNF grabbed the early lead with a straight-set victory by Paige Pridgeon and Cameron McGuire at No. 5, 2-0 (21-18, 21-15). The Ospreys No. 4 pair of Britt Claessens/Nicole Baran nearly made it 2-0 dropping a tough three-set decision to Stetson's All-Conference and All A-Sun Tournament pair, Catherine Coston/Alisha Hoffmann (21-14, 19-21, 17-15).
North Florida would sweep the top three pairings in the opening match with All-Tournament selection No. 3 Anna Wagner/Emily Strack winning 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) and No. 2 Carolyn Jenkins/Cari Whitmire surviving a three-set challenge, 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 15-13). UNF's top tandem and A-Sun Tournament Most Valuable Pair, Anna Budinska/Dagnija Medina, rallied from a set down to earn a three-set victory in the final pairing, 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-9).
Stetson set-up a rematch with the Ospreys after topping Jacksonville, 3-2, in the finals of the loser's bracket.
In the championship match, the Hatters claimed the first two points getting wins at both the four and five spots. Pridgeon/McGuire dropped a tough three-set contest, 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 15-7) while Claessens/Baran fell in straight sets (21-13, 21-18) allowing Stetson to move within a single win from the title.
Budinska/Medina posted a straight set (21-19, 21-14) win at the top spot for UNF's first point, followed quickly by a straight set (21-13, 21-19) set win at No. 2 for Jenkins/Whitmire. With the match score even at 2-2, the attention turned to the decisive No. 3 contest.
SU's Katie DiGirolamo/Savannah Byl earned a 21-19 win in the first set before Wagner/Strack rallied for a matching 21-19 set two victory sending the championship to a final third-set battle. The two sides traded points early before the Osprey pair eventually opened a slim advantage on the way to a 15-10 victory.
North Florida now awaits the announcement of the full field for the AVCA National Sand Championships on May 3-5 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
