JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team concludes a 15-game homestand with a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Kennesaw State at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys and Owls will play Friday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. before playing a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday slated for 1:00 p.m. each day.
All three games will be broadcast on the radio over the weekend. The Voice of the Ospreys, Robert Harper (@UNFVoice), will have the play-by-play for each game. All three games will be aired on 92.5 FM Jax Sports Radio, while Sunday's game will also be broadcast on 1010 XL.
Live stats, live video and in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) will be available throughout the weekend.
North Florida enters the weekend 27-11 overall, including a 9-3 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Kennesaw State comes to Harmon Stadium with a 20-19 record and an 8-7 league mark. The Ospreys are 20-6 this season at home, while the Owls are 6-6 on the road this year.
KSU is UNF's longest rivalry with the two teams meeting 66 times in program history. The Owls hold a slight 34-32 record in the all-time series. Kennesaw State has gotten the better of North Florida recently, winning 15 of the last 18 meetings, including six in a row.
Offensively, the Ospreys continue to swing the bats well. North Florida boasts a team batting average of .325 and all nine starters have an average above .300. Joe Wielbruda (.368), Donnie Dewees (.364) and Ryan Roberson (.364) pace the team with averages all above .360.
On the mound, North Florida has a 3.09 earned run average as a team. Michael Renner leads a talented pitching staff with a 1.30 ERA and a team-best six victories. Closer Corbin Olmstead has a team-high five saves on the season – the most in a single year since head coach Smoke Laval took over the club in 2011.
Entering the week, North Florida ranked first in the NCAA in hits, fourth in batting average, sixth in triples, 10th in triples per game, 13th in slugging percentage and 15th in runs scored. Individually, Tyler Marincov ranks third in triples – two back of the NCAA leader. Wielbruda is 10th in the country in hits. The Ospreys rank eighth in the country in walks allowed per nine innings. Renner is 25th in the NCAA in earned run average, while Tommy Organ is 20th in the country in games started. Defensively, North Florida is 12th in the NCAA in doubles plays turned.
Scouting the Opposition:
Friday night's probable starter Stephen Janas is now gaining national recognition, having been placed on the CollegeBaseballHall.org Pitcher of the Year watch list.
In the last outing against Georgia Southern, the Owls enjoyed plenty of production from the top of the lineup as the first four batters were good for nine of the 12 hits during the win over the Eagles.
Bo Way has regained the lead in terms of batting average, now hitting .316. Jacob Bruce had momentarily taken over the lead before Way grabbed it back with his last two outings. Alex Liquori now leads the squad in terms of home runs after belting two in his last three games.
