JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Sand Volleyball team claimed the outright regular season championship in the Atlantic Sun Conference after sweeping a pair of matches Wednesday against rival Jacksonville at the Dolphin Sand Volleyball Courts.
The Ospreys (13-2) finished with an undefeated 8-0 ASun record en route to securing the conference title for the second consecutive year and earning the top seed at the upcoming conference tournament. The two victories also provided UNF with a 7.5-5.5 lead in the annual River City Rumble competition standings.
“It's always a great contest when we play against JU,” said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. “We look forward to the opportunity of earning those barrel points for UNF. I thought our team came out and played extremely well in the first match and pulled out a good victory. I was also very proud of how they played in the second match.
In the day's first match, UNF jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after wins from No. 5 duo Paige Pridgeon/Cameron McGuire and No. 4 Britt Claessens/Julie Trembley. After winning the first game, Pridgeon/McGuire fell behind 7-0 before rallying for the win in game two.
The Dolphins earned their lone point of the match at No. 3 before the Osprey's No. 2 pairing of Carolyn Jenkins/Cari Whitmire outlasted JU's Kendall Courtney/Niatha Cullen in a three-game thriller to secure the decisive point.
In a bit of irony, Whitmire, who transferred from JU to UNF after last season, topped her former Dolphins pairs teammate Courtney to help the Ospreys claim the title.
UNF top pair Anna Budinska/Dagnija Medina then closed the match by handing JU's top tandem of Taylor Nyquist/Sammie Strausbaugh their first loss in conference play in straight games.
North Florida again raced out to the early 2-0 lead in match two behind victories from Pridgeon/McGuire at No. 5 and Emily Strack/Anna Wagner at No. 4. Claessens/Trembley completed an undefeated conference slate as a pair with a straight-game win at No. 3 and earned the decisive point for the Ospreys.
JU forged a late surge claiming wins at the top two positions including a thrilling three-game contest between the No. 1 duos. The loss for Budinska/Medina, who earlier in the day were named the ASun Pair of the Week, was their lone blemish in league play this season.
North Florida heads to Siesta Key, Fla., to participate in the Fiesta at Siesta tournament this weekend. The Ospreys face UL-Monroe in a dual match Friday before competing in the team and flighted pairs competitions on Saturday and Sunday. The Atlantic Sun Conference tournament is scheduled for Apr. 20-21 at JU.
“There is some great competition in the Atlantic Sun,” added Loeswick. “We are looking forward to being back here in a little over a week with the chance to play for an automatic qualifier spot in the national championship. Our goal is to get prepared and be playing our best the next time we take these courts.”
