Softball Downs Bethune-Cookman 4-2 in Nonconference Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball picked up its 30th win of the 2013 season on Wednesday evening with a 4-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman at the UNF Softball Complex. It is the first time since 2008 in which the Ospreys have a 30-win season. The game was also UNF's regular-season nonconference finale.

Bethune-Cookman took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of an Osprey fielding miscue to get Calesha Shelley home from second.

However, UNF answered in the bottom half of the inning. After both Danica Mandarano and Kelly Wilson got on base to start the inning for the Ospreys, Mariah Reynolds drilled a three-run shot to center field that put UNF up 3-1. It was Reynolds' fifth home run of the season.

The Ospreys pushed their lead to three in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners, Lauren Pollack sent a single up the middle that brought home Brittany Hendrix and made it a 4-1 Osprey advantage.

Bethune-Cookman brought it down to a two-run game in the top of the fifth with a Shamaria Engram lead-off homer.

Kaylie Wallace had the win in order to move to 16-4 in the pitching circle for the season. In 5.0 innings, she allowed one earned run off four hits and struck out four.

Cortney Radke got her second save of the year. In the last 2.0 innings, Radke kept Bethune-Cookman hitless, did not allow a walk and recorded three strikeouts.

Shanel Tolbert pitched all 6.0 innings for the Lady Wildcats in the loss. Tolbert allowed three earned runs off six hits and also struck out four.

UNF wraps up its current 10-game homestand this weekend with a three-game Atlantic Sun series against Mercer. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
