JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 10-game homestand concludes for the University of North Florida softball team when the Ospreys host Mercer in a three-game Atlantic Sun series Saturday and Sunday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The 10 games is the longest stretch of home contests for the Ospreys this season. Through the homestand's first seven games, UNF has a 6-1 record that includes conference series sweep of ETSU two weekends ago and a critical series win over Kennesaw State last weekend.
UNF comes off a 4-2 win over Bethune-Cookman in the Ospreys' regular-season nonconference finale on Wednesday. In that game, Mariah Reynolds belted her team-leading fifth home run of the season with a three-run shot over the center field wall in the bottom of the first. The win allowed UNF to notch its first 30-win season since 2008.
Pitching continues to be one of UNF's strongest points. The Osprey pitching staff has a combined 1.81 ERA through 271.0 innings that ranks second in the Atlantic Sun. Meanwhile, sophomore Kaylie Wallace leads the A-Sun with a 1.33 ERA and is one of two pitchers with a conference-best 16 wins on the season.
Mercer comes off a mid-week 9-1 victory in five innings over Georgia Teach, but has just won two of its last nine games. In their most recent A-Sun series, the Bears posted a 7-6 win over Florida Gulf Coast last Saturday, but then dropped the final two games of the series by 12-5 and 15-7 scores. McKenzie Woody enters the weekend hitting a team-best .431, a batting average that is second in the A-Sun, with a conference-leading 69 hits. Additionally, against A-Sun teams, she is batting .468 with 29 hits. Meanwhile, both Krista Kennedy and Randi Rae have each hit 11 home runs on the season.
The all-time series between UNF and Mercer is tied at 7-7. Throughout the history, each team has recorded just one series sweep. UNF took both games of a doubleheader on Apr. 2007 in Macon, while Mercer swept the May 7, 2010 doubleheader that was also in Macon. Last year, one run decided both games of the Atlantic Sun doubleheader on Apr. 7, 2012. Mercer won Game One 3-2, while UNF captured Game Two 2-1.
This weekend's series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday and is capped with a single game on Sunday. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., from the UNF Softball Complex. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
