JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team opens up the week with a nonconference midweek game against in-state rival Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
Live stats, in-game tweets (@OspreyBSB) and ASun.TV will be available for the game. The game will also be “Toss It Back Tuesday” featuring 2-for-1 draft beers while supplies last. Gates open at 5:00 p.m.
North Florida leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman 11-6, including an 8-2 mark at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys won the first eight meetings between the two teams in Jacksonville, although the Wildcats won the last two meetings at Harmon Stadium.
Earlier this season, the Ospreys earned a 4-2 victory over the Wildcats in 11 innings at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Feb. 19. Bethune-Cookman earned a 6-5 win over North Florida in 14 innings in the last meeting between the two teams on Tuesday, March 26 at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys fell behind 5-0 after an inning and a half of play. North Florida was able to chip away at the lead before tying the game in the bottom of the fifth inning at 5-5. Neither team was able to score until the Wildcats plated a run in the top of the 14th inning. The Ospreys were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, dropping the second longest game in UNF's Division I history.
The longest game in school history happened on March 13, 2007 as North Florida battled Indiana for 16 innings before earning a 10-9 victory. The Ospreys' 14 inning contest fell just two innings shy of that mark. The game was the fifth extra-inning game of the season for North Florida.
Donnie Dewees was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league office. The honor is the first of Dewees' career and the third conference accolade for the Ospreys this season. Dewees joins Tyler Marincov (March 11) and Corey Bass (March 25) with A-Sun Player of the Week accolades this season.
Dewees batted .550 on the week, boasting a 1.050 slugging percentage and a .545 on-base percentage. He finished the week 11-for-20 with four doubles, three triples, seven runs scored and a team-best 11 RBI, helping North Florida to a series victory over ETSU. The true freshman recorded multiple hits in all four games on the week, including setting a North Florida school record with three triples in a game.
Drew Weeks made school history on Sunday afternoon as the sophomore became the first Osprey to hit for the cycle. Weeks opened the game with a home run in the second inning. He followed that with a triple in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, the sophomore singled to move one step closer to history. Weeks flew out to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came through with a double through the left side of the infield in the eighth to make history.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats claimed an early lead and never looked back in Sunday's series finale with Savannah State turning in an all-around team performance to close the weekend with a rout of the Tigers, winning 14-2 by run-rule at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
Since 1979, Bethune-Cookman has won 13 MEAC titles. In addition, the Wildcats have been to 13 NCAA Regionals.
