Ospreys Continue Road Swing with South Alabama

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team is set for a three-game nonconference road series with the University of South Alabama. The series at USA's Eddie Stanky Field is slated to begin on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The weekend continues with games on Saturday, March 9 at 3:00 p.m. (ET) and Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. (ET).

North Florida enters the weekend with a 10-3 overall record, including a 3-0 mark in road games. The Ospreys have defeated Bethune-Cookman (W, 4-2 – 11 inn.), No. 29 Florida (W, 7-6 – 10 inn.) and UCF (W, 9-5) in road games so far this season.
South Alabama is 12-2 overall with a perfect 8-0 record at home.
The Ospreys and Jaguars have met up four times in the programs' histories with UNF holding a 3-1 advantage.
South Alabama won the first ever meeting between the two schools – a 4-2 decision in Mobile in the 2010 Coca-Cola Classic.
Last season, the two teams met at Harmon Stadium with the Ospreys sweeping the series. North Florida won the first game 10-4 before claiming the series with an 8-7 victory in game two. In the third and final game, Garrick Ferguson hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Ospreys to a 7-3 win.
In the Ospreys last outing, North Florida baseball team improved to 10-3 overall on the season after a 9-5 victory on the road against UCF on Tuesday night at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando, Fla. The Ospreys thwarted a late rally by the Knights to improve to 3-0 on the road this year.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored nine runs on 17 hits, including six extra base hits. North Florida recorded three home runs on the day. Alex Bacon led all Osprey players, finishing the game 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, a run scored and four RBI. Drew Weeks and Tyler Marincov each added home runs in the game, going back-to-back in the top of the seventh inning. Joe Wielbruda and Corbin Olmstead each finished the game with three hits. Ryan Roberson and Olmstead also added doubles in the game.
North Florida also shined on the pitcher's mound. Starting pitcher Michael Renner tossed 7.0 scoreless innings. The senior allowed just four hits and two walks on the night, keeping the Knights off the scoreboard. He posted a season-best four strikeouts en route to his second victory of the season. Renner notched three 1-2-3 innings in his outing.
Kyle Westwood, Ryan McMahon and Olmstead combined for the final two innings. Westwood pitched 1.0 innings, allowing a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits with a strikeout. McMahon worked the next 0.2 innings surrendering three unearned runs on three hits with a K. Olmstead picked up his second save of the season striking out the final batter to secure the victory.
Scouting the Opposition:
South Alabama is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and is under the direction of second-year head coach Mark Calvi. The Jaguars enter the weekend series with a 12-2 overall record, including a perfect 8-0 mark at home.
On the mound, USA will throw LHP Jacob Noble on Friday night before sending RHP Brandon Boyle to the mound to start Saturday's game. On Sunday, RHP Jarron Cito will toe the rubber for the Jaguars. The Ospreys will counter with LHP Tommy Organ, RHP Kyle Westwood and RHP Nick Allbritton.
