SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team overcame a lengthy weather delay en route to a 4-0 shutout at USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon.
After a light rain fell for much of the day, the courts were not able to be cleared in time for the scheduled 2 p.m. start time, forcing the match to be pushed back until roughly 4:30 p.m. The match also began with singles play, due to further concerns regarding weather and travel.
Senior Lorena Aviles opened the match in dominating fashion, rolling to a quick 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1, while senior Melanie Aguirre followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Sophomore Marina Cunningham then put the Ospreys just one point from victory with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 4.
Sophomore Taylor Hollander clinched the match for UNF just minutes later, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. It was Hollander's ninth victory in her last 11 singles matches.
Following Hollander's win, the remaining singles matches were left unfinished and doubles play was omitted. The Ospreys were up a set in both unfinished matches when the match was concluded.
“I was very happy with the way we performed today, especially after having a bad match yesterday,” Head Coach Audra Cohen said. “Hopefully, last night's match will galvanize us and get us going, so we can play like we did today for the rest of the season.”
With the win, UNF has won six of its last seven matches and is now 10-4 on the year, including a 3-1 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Friday, April 4 after an idle weekend. UNF will take on Florida Gulf Coast in a 10 a.m. match.
