Round One Results (pdf)
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Led by a trio of golfers ranked among the top 10 individuals, the No. 14 North Florida men's golf team finished opening round play Friday in second place at the Furman Intercollegiate.
The Ospreys carded a first round four-under 284 and are just four shots behind tournament leader Virginia Tech. Sophomore MJ Maguire sits in a four-way tie atop the individual medalist competition following a four-under 68 that included a tournament leading seven birdies.
Joining Maguire in the top ten, senior Sean Dale is tied for seventh after shooting a 70 (-2) and freshman Austin Padova is tied for 10th at 71 (-1).
Senior Kevin Phelan posted an opening round 75 to end the day tied for 48th while redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock rounded out the Osprey lineup with a 76 (T-58th). Junior Taylor Johnson, playing as an individual, is also tied for 48th at 75.
“It was not our best performance today but fortunately we were still able to rank among the leaders,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “MJ played well but probably left a few putts out on the course which would have made his round even better. I thought Austin gave us a good lift playing in the lineup for this first time this spring. We need to rest up and be ready to get right back out there in the morning.”
The Hokies lead the 21-team field after posting an eight-under 280 on Friday. Winthrop is one stroke behind the Ospreys at 285 with Western Carolina (287) and Chattanooga (290) completing the top five squads.
Maguire shares the medalist lead with WCU's JT Poston, VT's Trevor Cone and Tory's Jake Tucker.
Tournament action at the Furman University Golf Course continues with second round play Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Paired with Georgia State and Iowa State, the Ospreys will tee off at 8:50 a.m. from tee No. 10.
