GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 14 North Florida men's golf team remained in contention Saturday at the Furman Intercollegiate after carding a second round 286.
The Ospreys stayed in second-place with a two-day total of 570, just four strokes behind Virginia Tech. Senior Kevin Phelan led the UNF day two performance firing a four-under 68.
Leading the North Florida lineup, sophomore MJ Maguire is tied for fifth at 140 while Phelan and senior Sean Dale are both tied for 10th at 143. Maguire and Dale posted rounds of 72 and 73, respectively on Saturday.
Freshman Austin Padova is tied for 37th (147) after a day two 76 while redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock rounds out the Osprey squad in a tie for 42nd (149) following is one-over 73. Junior Taylor Johnson is also tied for 42nd (149) playing as an individual.
“It was another very average day for us,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We kept ourselves in position to win, but it will require some better play. It's always fun and a beneficial experience to have the opportunity to play in the last group.”
The Hokies continue to top the 21-team field with a 36-hole total of 566. The Ospreys are second with Western Carolina (576), Troy (579) and Winthrop (582) and Iowa State (582) rounding out the top five teams. Tech's Trevor Cone and Iowa State's Scott Fernandez share the medalist lead at 137 (-7).
Tournament action at the Furman University Golf Course concludes Sunday with final round action. The Ospreys will be paired with Virginia Tech and Western Carolina beginning at 1:10 p.m. off of the first tee.
