Ospreys Open A-Sun Play with Shutout of Kennesaw State
3/14/2013 6:18:00 PM | Men's Tennis
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team rolled to its fifth-consecutive victory on Thursday afternoon, blanking Kennesaw State in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener, 7-0, at UNF Tennis Complex.
Playing with an altered lineup, the Ospreys were still able to capture their sixth straight doubles point. Sophomore Norbert Nemcsek and senior Daniel Sotomarino were tied 4-4 at No. 1 when they ran off four straight games to grab an 8-4 win over Tobi Menhofer and Louis Theodor, while senior Julien Belair and sophomore Timo Kranz earned an 8-4 win over Maksim Yorsh and Gianni Kubin at No. 2.
After today's action, UNF owns a 20-13 record in doubles matches this season, despite facing nine nationally-ranked opponents in its first 12 matches.
The Ospreys picked up their second point of the match quickly as Belair's opponent at No. 2 singles was forced to retire due to sickness. Nemcsek then doubled UNF's advantage with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3.
Senior Pedro Davisson sealed the match for the Ospreys with a win at No. 4, triumphing in straight sets over Theodor, 6-3, 6-2.
With the match in hand, freshman Bernardo Craveiro earned his second collegiate victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6, while senior Leonardo Nahar grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5. Sotomarino then sealed the sweep for the Ospreys with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 win in his first match at No. 1 this season. The victory marked Sotomarino's fourth consecutive win.
Belair and Nemcsek also extended their own winning streaks, as each won their fifth-straight singles match for UNF.
With the win, the Ospreys move to 7-6 on the season, including a 5-1 mark at UNF Tennis Complex. Kennesaw State falls to 2-8 on the year with the loss.
UNF will be back on the courts on Saturday, March 16, when they host the Bears of Mercer in a 2 p.m. match at UNF Tennis Complex. Admission to all UNF tennis matches is free to the public.
