BOCA RATON, Fla. – University of North Florida softball's defense and pitching shined on Day Two at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament, helping the Ospreys to an 8-0 five-inning win over Towson and then a 5-0 shutout of host Florida Atlantic later in the day. Junior pitcher Cortney Radke fired a no-hitter – the second one of her career – in the win against Towson, while sophomore Kayla Goff got her third complete-game shutout of the season against FAU.
In Game One against Towson, UNF had a huge six-run top of the fourth that saw the Ospreys bat around. With two outs and the bases load, Jackie Reese ripped a three-run double to center field that put UNF up 3-0. The bases were later loaded up again, but this time for Rachel Engel, whose single brought home Reese and kept the bases full. In the next at-bat, Kelly Wilson doubled up the middle and drove in Abby Tewey and Lexi Taylor to make it 6-0.
UNF added two more runs in the fifth on two more two-out bases loaded opportunities. Stephanie McAdam got home on a Tewey hit, while Marissa Thomas had the game's final run when Danica Mandarano had an infield single.
Radke was credited with the 5.0 inning victory. She struck out four and only walked two as the Osprey defense did not commit any errors and only left two batters on base in order to preserve Radke's second no-hitter as an Osprey. Radke pitched her first no-hitter during her freshman season in a 3-0 win over Florida A&M on Mar. 2, 2011.
Missy McCormick had the loss after allowing five runs off two hits in 3.2 innings. She also struck out three.
Seven different Ospreys registered hits on the day, while Reese and Wilson had three and two RBIs, respectively.
In the day's second game, UNF scored runs in each of the first two innings. A two-out single by Thomas drove in Wilson in the first inning to put the Ospreys up 1-0. UNF tacked on two more runs in the second inning when Lauren Pollack had a two-run double to make it 3-0.
UNF went up 5-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on first, Mariah Reynolds ripped a triple that brought home Ashley Holton. Megan David, who pinch ran for Reynolds, then scored when Thomas grounded out.
Goff went 7.0 innings and struck out four in the win.
Stephanie Call had the loss after giving up five runs in 5.1 innings. Call also struck out six.
UNF finishes up play at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Sunday against UConn. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
