JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns home for three-games against the Citadel at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The first game is slated for Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m. with the series continuing Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record. The Ospreys opened the 2013 season winning a three-game series with West Virginia. UNF claimed the first two games of the series (W, 4-0 and W, 7-6), before being edged in the finale (L, 3-4). North Florida then traveled to Daytona Beach for a midweek tilt with in-state foe Bethune-Cookman. The Ospreys and Wildcats battled into extra innings before UNF prevailed 4-2 in 11 innings.
Offensively, the Ospreys boast four players with a batting average of .300 or higher, led by senior Corey Bass. The Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference catcher is hitting .429 on the young season, while junior first baseman Ryan Roberson is close behind with a .400 clip. Drew Weeks (.313) and Paul Karmeris (.300) are also batting .300 or better. Tyler Marincov and Joe Wielbruda have each reached base safely in all four games this season, while Weeks and Donnie Dewees enter the weekend with a team-best three-game hitting streak each.
As a team, North Florida is hitting .290 with 40 hits, including six doubles and a home run. The Ospreys boast a team on-base percentage of .375 with a slugging percentage of .355.
On the mound, senior Tommy Organ is slated to start on Friday night. The lefty earns his first start of 2013 after making an appearance in the Ospreys' 4-0 shutout victory of West Virginia in the season opener. Organ tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball, surrendering three hits without a walk, while adding a strikeout.
On Saturday, Kyle Westwood will toe the rubber for North Florida. The senior started the second game of the three-game series with WVU, working 6.1 innings. The hurler registered six strikeouts compared to just one walk in his first outing of the season.
Nick Allbritton will once again earn the start on Sunday afternoon. In the season-opening weekend, the senior tossed 6.2 innings in a quality start. Allbritton allowed just one walk, while striking out four batters.
As a whole, the Osprey pitching staff has combined for 38.0 innings of work, allowing 12 runs (11 earned runs). The group has walked just five batters, while fanning 25.
North Florida and the Citadel have met on the diamond three times in program history. In the first meeting – the only contest played in Jacksonville – the Ospreys claimed a 7-4 victory at Harmon Stadium on March 4, 1995.
Last season, the Ospreys and Bulldogs played a pair of midweek games against one another in Charleston, S.C. at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. UNF claimed the first game 6-3, but dropped a 5-1 decision in the finale.
In the opener, Organ earned the victory, working 5.2 innings and striking out a career-high nine batters. On the mound, the North Florida pitching staff scattered six hits and allowed just three runs with only two earned runs. The pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, paced by Organ's career-high nine. Organ surrendered four hits in 5.2 innings of work with no walks. Trey Ferrano and Allbritton combined to work the next 2.1 innings, allowing two runs – one earned run – on a pair of hits. The duo each recorded a strikeout while allowing a walk. Chandler Jagodzinski (2011-12) picked up his third save of the season, tossing the final inning. He faced the minimum, striking out one.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored six runs on seven hits. Six different UNF batters recorded hits on the night with Wielbruda notching a pair of base knocks. Andrew Karmeris (2009-12) made his one hit count with a three-run home run that proved to be the game-winning hit.
In the finale, North Florida surrendered three runs in the bottom of the third inning and was unable to rally for the victory. The Ospreys finished the game with one run on six hits, led by a pair of hits by Roberson. Marincov and Spencer Herrmann added doubles in the game, but the offensive production was not enough to recover from the early deficit.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Citadel enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record. The Bulldogs opened the 2013 season with a pair of victories in the Homewood Suites Tournament presented by Charleston Crab House. The Citadel defeated George Mason 9-1 in the season opener and edged Kansas State 10-8 on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped a 7-2 decision to High Point in the final game of the tournament. On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Citadel earned a 6-4 victory over Winthrop.
The probable rotation for the Bulldogs is RHP Austin Pritcher (Friday), LHP James Reeves (Saturday) and RHP Austin Mason (Sunday).
