Baseball Travels to Daytona Beach for First Road Game of 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team hits the road for a midweek game against in-state rival Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
The Ospreys enter the week after claiming a three-game series 2-to-1 over Big 12 opponent West Virginia. North Florida opened the 2013 campaign with a 4-0 shutout on Friday night and clinched the series with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory on Saturday afternoon. UNF dropped the final game of the series, being edged 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The North Florida pitching staff excelled in the opening weekend. The Ospreys hurlers scattered 32 hits with just four extra base hits over 27.0 innings, allowing 10 runs (9 earned runs) with 22 strikeouts compared to just four walks.
Offensively, the Ospreys hit .313 as a team with 31 hits, including five doubles and a home run. UNF scored 14 runs in three games (4.67 per game) with 10 RBI over the weekend. As a team, the Ospreys posted a .394 slugging percentage and a .391 on-base percentage. Twelve different North Florida players had at least one at bat over the opening weekend and all 12 recorded at least one hit.
North Florida leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman, 10-5. The Ospreys are 8-1 all-time against the Wildcats in Jacksonville, but just 2-4 against BCU in Daytona Beach. Last season the Ospreys finished a three-game set with Bethune-Cookman, winning one and losing two.
Last season, UNF finished 12-9 against teams from the Sunshine State. The Ospreys posted wins against USF, Florida A&M (4), FIU, Florida Gulf Coast, Bethune-Cookman, Stetson, Jacksonville (2) and Florida – who was ranked No. 1 in the country when North Florida posted a 10-5 upset victory.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Wildcats enter Tuesday's game 1-2 after dropping a road series with Arizona State. Bethune-Cookman fell in extra innings on Friday, before losing the series on Saturday. The Wildcats earned a victory in the final game of the series for their first win of 2013.
Last season, Bethune-Cookman won their seventh consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title, advancing to the school's 15th NCAA Regional Appearance.
