Tournament Central: Troy Subway Invitational
TROY, Ala. – University of North Florida softball makes its first out-of-state trip this weekend when the Ospreys play in the three-day Troy Subway Invitational. UNF faces Virginia Tech, host Troy and Evansville during the tournament.
UNF is off to one of its best starts in recent years with a 4-1 record. The Ospreys went 3-1 during last weekend's Panhandle Invitational and then posted a 2-0 win at UCF on Wednesday.
Sophomore pitcher Kayla Goff has registered shutouts in each of her wins this season. Goff was the winning pitcher in yesterday's game at UCF, going all 7.0 innings and striking out four. She enters the weekend with a 1.03 ERA in 20.1 innings.
Virginia Tech comes off a 4-1 performance at the Dot Richardson National Collegiate Softball Invitational in Clermont, Fla. The Hokies took a pair of run-rule games against LIU and in the second game against Southern Illinois. Virginia Tech won the first game against Southern Illinois and its contest against Chattanooga by two runs each, but the Hokies suffered a 2-0 loss to Fordham. Kat Banks led the Hokies with a .500 batting average and had four runs and one home run. Meanwhile, Kelly Heinz brings a 0.00 ERA through 12.2 innings in the circle and had a no-hitter in Game Two vs. Southern Illinois.
This is the first meeting between UNF and Virginia Tech.
Troy plays its first home games of the season, but will not return to its home field until Mar. 23 vs. Louisiana-Monroe. The Trojans were supposed to play at mid-week game against Florida State in Tallahassee on Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to rain. The Trojans went 2-2 last weekend at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss. Three players come into this weekend hitting over .400 – Hannah Renn (.462, 6-for-13), Chandler Griffin (.455, 5-for-11) and Taylor Smartt (.444, 4-for-9).
Troy leads the all-time series with UNF 5-2, but in the most recent meeting, UNF prevailed. The Ospreys defeated Troy 3-2 on Feb. 20, 2011 at Troy's Quality Inn Classic, which snapped a five-game losing skid to the Trojans.
Evansville opens the 2013 season with this weekend's tournament. The Purple Aces play four early season tournaments, but will host two of those. Evansville returns six starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's team that was 18-37. Among those returners is sophomore Kayla Fortner who hit a team-best .359 (55-for-153) and was named Second-Team All-Midwest Region by the NFCA.
This is the first meeting between UNF and Evansville.
