
Softball Splits on Day One at Troy Subway Invitational

TROY, Ala. – University of North Florida split its games during the first day of the Troy Subway Invitational on Friday. The Ospreys fell 3-1 to Virginia Tech to start the day, but then rebounded with a two-run seventh inning in order to take a 3-2 win over host Troy.
Virginia Tech got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Both of the Hokies' runs came on fielder's choice decisions.
UNF got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jackie Reese blasted a shot over the left field wall that made it 2-1. However, Virginia Tech responded in the bottom half of the inning when Kelsey Mericka scored the game's final run on an Amanda Ake RBI single.
Kayla Goff was credited with the loss. In 4.0 innings, she struck out two, but allowed five hits and two earned runs.
Jasmin Harrell pitched all 7.0 innings in the win for the Hokies. Harrell also struck out two and gave up seven hits and one earned run.
Kelly Wilson was 2-for-4 from the plate, while Reese was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
Five different Virginia Tech players each recorded one hit.
In the day's second game, UNF and Troy played through four scoreless innings. The Ospreys went up 1-0 when Danica Mandarano scored on a Marissa Thomas hit up the middle in the top of the fifth.
Troy erased the Ospreys' lead in the bottom of the sixth. Amanda Winters sent a bases-load hit up the middle that brought in a pair of runs that put the Trojans ahead 2-1.
UNF answered with two runs of its own in the top of the seventh. As Marissa Thomas hit into a fielder's choice, a Troy throwing error on the play resulted in Mandarano scored the game-tying run and Marissa Thomas to reach third. A passed ball allowed Marissa Thomas to score the eventual game-winner.
Cortney Radke pitched the final 1.2 innings en route to receiving the win. Radke faced six batters, striking out one and allowing two hits.
Sarah Thomas threw all 7.0 innings for the Trojans in the loss. She struck out five, but gave up three hits. All three of UNF's runs were unearned.
Mandarano, Marissa Thomas and Brittany Hendrix were all 1-for-3.
Caitlin Ortiz was 2-for-2 from the plate for the Trojans.
UNF continues play at the Troy Subway Invitational with two games on Saturday. The Ospreys start the day against Evansville at Noon EST. The day's second game will be based upon seeding. For live stats and updates to the tournament's schedule, click here.
