ORLANDO, Fla. – Runs in the top of the fifth were the difference maker and the University of North Florida softball team posted a 2-0 win at UCF on Wednesday evening in a game that included a 1-hour, 5-minute rain delay in between the fifth and sixth innings at the UCF Softball Complex.
Solid defensive performances kept it a scoreless game until the fifth inning. Leading up to the fifth, UNF and UCF had only combined for three hits and only seven batters reaching base.
UNF broke the scoreless tie when it took advantage of back-to-back Knight errors. UCF's first error resulted in Stephanie McAdam reaching third and Kelly Wilson getting to first. In the next at-bat, a throwing error scored McAdam and put Wilson and Brittany Hendrix on the corners. Then, Ashley Holton sent an RBI-single to left field that drove home Wilson and put UNF up 2-0.
Kayla Goff pitched all 7.0 innings en route to getting the win and her second complete-game shutout of the season. Goff struck out four batters and only allowed two hits.
Mackenzie Audras was credited with the loss. She struck out seven in 7.0 innings, but allowed three hits. Both of UNF's runs were unearned.
Hendrix led UNF with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate.
UNF returns to action at this weekend's Troy Subway Invitational in Troy, Ala. The Ospreys open the three-day tournament on Friday with games against Virginia Tech at Noon EST and host Troy at 6:30 p.m., EST.
