ORLANDO, Fla. – University of North Florida softball plays its first mid-week game of the 2013 season on Wednesday when the Ospreys visit UCF for a single-game at 5:30 p.m., at the UCF Softball Complex.
“We had a great season-opening weekend that established where we are at with our training,” said head coach Marcie Hickey. “Tomorrow will be another great test for us at UCF, who returns several key players. Last year's game was close and competitive and we expect much of the same, but hope for a different outcome.”
UNF comes off a 3-1 performance at the Panhandle Invitational. The Ospreys collected a pair of wins against Bethune-Cookman and another against Florida A&M. The only blemish came against tournament host No. 25/24 Florida State. UNF hung tough the Seminoles and were tied at 1-1 until Florida State scored two runs in the fifth inning. It marked the second-straight year in which UNF finished its first early-season tournament with a winning record.
During UNF's season-opening weekend, sophomore pitcher Kaylie Wallace became the first player to fan 10-or-more batters since Cortney Radke struck out 10 against Stetson in Game Two on Apr. 30, 2011. Wallace shutdown 11 Bethune-Cookman batters during UNF's 3-1 win on Feb. 9. Meanwhile, Ashley Holton had a stellar debut, hitting a team-best .417. She was also a perfect 3-for-3 in UNF's 5-3 win over Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 10.
UCF opened the season at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Knights went 0-4 on the weekend, but faced No. 18/18 Louisville and two teams that were receiving votes (Texas Tech and DePaul). The Knight had also received votes in the ESPN/USA Softball Preseason Poll. Kahley Novak led the Knights' offense with a .417 batting average with five hits and two doubles. Danielle Brewer was .400 (4-for-10) from the plate and Hailey Barraco hit two homers during UCF's time in Las Vegas.
The Knights lead the all-time series 7-4 and took last year's mid-week single game 3-0 on Mar. 28, 2012 in Jacksonville. However, UNF has won the last two times the Ospreys and UCF played in Orlando.
