TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball swept both of its games on Sunday and finished the Panhandle Invitational with a 3-1 record. The Ospreys blanked Florida A&M 6-0 and then used a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-3 win over Bethune-Cookman.
In the first game, UNF capitalized on a Florida A&M miscue to go up 1-0. Kelly Wilson scored from third on a throwing error.
UNF added three runs in the sixth. With runners on the corners, Mariah Reynolds sent a double to center field that brought home Danica Mandarano. Jackie Reese later scored on a two-out single by Lauren Pollack, while an Abby Tewey hit in the next at-bat allowed Ashley Holton to score and give the Ospreys a 4-0 lead.
The Ospreys tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Brittany Hendrix scored from second on a Reese hit up down the left field line. Reese then scored on a Holton double that put UNF up 6-0.
Kayla Goff pitched all 7.0 innings en route to getting the win. Goff fanned four batters and allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout.
Jennifer Lindsey threw 6.2 innings in the loss. Lindsey gave up 11 hits and five earned runs and struck out three.
Reese was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Robbielyn Roberson was 2-for-2 for the Lady Rattlers.
In the second game, Bethune-Cookman struck first when Kelsey Rodney scored on an illegal pitch in the top of the second. However, UNF responded during the bottom half of the inning. Abby Tewey sent a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Holton and tied the game at 1-1.
With runners in scoring position, Reynolds' single to center field drove in UNF's first of four runs during the fourth inning. Reese scored on Reynolds' hit and made it 2-1. The Ospreys took advantage of two Bethune-Cookman errors committed during Tewey's at-bat, allowing Holton and Lexi Taylor, who pinch ran for Reynolds, to cross home. A Marissa Thomas single to center field drove in Tewey from second and UNF took a 5-1 advantage.
Bethune-Cookman's last two runs came with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh. Rodney scored during an Osprey miscue, while Melissa Berouty reached home on an Aurelia Gamch hit.
Cortney Radke was credited with the win after pitching 6.0 innings and fanned five batters. Radke allowed six hits and one earned run. Goff received the save after pitching 0.1 innings.
Samantha Gale pitched all 6.0 innings in the loss for the Lady Wildcats. She struck out one and allowed four earned runs off seven hits.
Holton was 3-for-3 with two runs for the Ospreys.
