JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's soccer team closes out its regular season schedule Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m., at Hodges Stadium. The Ospreys will honor their 2013 senior class in a pregame ceremony.
UNF carries a three-match unbeaten streak into the contest following a thrilling 1-1 double overtime draw at rival Jacksonville on Wednesday night. With the tie, the Ospreys improved to 6-5-3 overall and 2-3-2 in the Atlantic Sun while also securing a spot in the upcoming ASun Tournament for the first time since 2009.
Saturday's contest marks the final home appearance for a trio of Osprey players including Brad Sienkiewicz, Luis Daniel Camejo and Grady Trimble.
FGCU claimed the Atlantic Sun regular season title and will serve as the host of the tournament beginning on Nov. 13. The Eagles, who boast a 7-6-2 overall mark and a 5-1-1 record in league play, feature a lineup with five different players who have netted at least four goals this season.
A goalkeeper from Brandon, Fla., Sienkiewicz has posted 57 saves in 13 games for the Ospreys this season. He has twice been named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week this year. He ranks fifth in the league for goals against average (1.11) and tops the conference listings with a .792 save percentage. Sienkiewicz is currently enrolled in graduate school at UNF majoring in athletic administration. He will conclude his two-year career with the Ospreys ranked among the career leaders for saves, GAA, wins and shutouts.
"Brad has been an instrumental part of our program's growth over the past few years," said UNF head coach Derek Marinatos. "He is an excellent goalkeeper and shot stopper, and has provided much need experience and leadership for our young program. I look forward to seeing his journey continue in soccer, and hope he has an opportunity to play at the next level or continue developing as a coach."
A midfielder from Caracas, Venezuela, Camejo is a four-year performer for the Ospreys. He has appeared in 43 contests heading into Saturday's match and collected 25 shots including 11 on goal. He is a three-time member of the Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Honor Roll for his work in the classroom.
"Luis has been through so much with this program over the past three years," added Marinatos. "He has been a captain for two years and brings so much positive energy, commitment, and hard work to this team. I can always rely on him to bring a high level of professionalism on or off the field. I have no doubt that he will be successful in all of his life's pursuits."
Trimble, a junior defender for UNF from Clearwater, Fla., will be honored Saturday because he plans to graduate this spring and pass up his fourth season of collegiate competition. In his two seasons with the Ospreys, he has played in 23 matches serving as a key backline performer. Trimble garnered ASun Academic Honor Roll recognition last season and was named to the Big South Conference All-Freshman team while playing at Winthrop in his debut season.
"Grady is one of the most mentally strong players I have ever coached," Marinatos said. "His willingness to put in the work on and off the field as a student-athlete is inspiring. He is a great 1-vs-1 defender and has strong leadership qualities. He is graduating early to pursue a career in television broadcasting, and I have no doubt that we will be seeing him on television in the near future."
Saturday's match has been designated UNF's "Coaches vs. Cancer" match. The Ospreys will be raising money for cancer research by selling $5 raffle tickets for a team autographed jersey. The winner of the drawing will be announced at halftime of the match on Saturday night.
Following Saturday's tilt, North Florida turns its attention to postseason play. The Ospreys will play a yet to be determined opponent in opening round action of the Atlantic Sun Championship on Wednesday in Ft. Myers, Fla.
