JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida men's soccer team begins its final week of regular season competition on the road against crosstown rival Jacksonville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys are riding a two-match win streak following back-to-back 1-0 shutout victories over Mercer and Stetson. With the victory, UNF improved to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The six wins is the most since 2008 and the two consecutive conference wins marks the first time since 2009.
In their last outing, UNF got an overtime goal from Jon-Michael Vieira with just over three minutes left to play. Vieira became the 10th different player to net a goal for the Ospreys. It was also the team's fourth shutout of the year helping defender Diogo Quirino capture the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Jacksonville has dropped its last four contests including a 2-0 loss at conference regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast last Saturday. The Dolphins own a 4-10-1 overall mark and a 2-4-0 record in the league. Matheus Saroli leads the JU attack with four goals on the year.
The Ospreys and Dolphins are both still in the hunt for a spot in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. UNF is currently tied for fifth with seven points with JU just a point behind at six. Jacksonville holds a 10-6 edge in the all-time series including a current three-match win streak. UNF has claimed the win in two of its last three visits to JU.
Jacksonville currently holds a 3-2 lead in the annual River City Rumble competition with Wednesday's contest the last available point for the fall.
Following Wednesday's tilt, North Florida closes its regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. versus FGCU at Hodges Stadium. UNF's senior class will be honored prior to the game. Saturday's game has been designated as the "Coaches vs. Cancer" game, with the Osprey's raffling off an autographed team jersey. Tickets for the raffle are $5 and will be available at the match.
