JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball returns to action on Monday night against Samford at UNF Arena at 5:30 p.m. The game is part of an Osprey doubleheader that includes UNF's men's basketball facing Savannah State following the women's game.
Â
"We are looking forward to playing our second home game of the season," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Samford will be a very good test for us. They were picked to finish second in the Southern Conference and are very discipline and fundamentally sound. We will have to be very strong defensively and continue to improve on our execution on the offensive end."
Â
The Ospreys won their home-opener on Thursday morning, posting a 76-55 win over Edward Waters in front of 2,233 fans during Elementary School Day at UNF Arena. Post players were a key part for UNF on Thursday with Raneisha Lamar, Paulina Zaveckaite, Larkira Jones and Janeá Williams combining to go 15-for-19 from the field and score 34 points.
Â
UNF has registered over 70 points in each of its last two games. In the Ospreys' Division I history, it is just the third time the Ospreys had consecutive 70+ point games.
Â
Samford enters Monday with a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs claimed a season-opening 62-60 victory at Memphis on Nov. 10, but fell to Talladega 50-49 on a buzzer-beater on Thursday night. Ellen Riggins and Hannah Nichols enter Monday averaging 15.5 and 10.5 points per game, while Krista Strickland is closing behind with 9.5 points per game. Riggns also leads the Bulldogs with 7.5 rebounds.
Â
Monday will be the first meeting between UNF and Samford.
