JACKSONVILLE – Bolstered by a program best round 295, the North Florida women's golf team ended day one play in second place at the Courtyard Classic held at Marsh Landing Country Club.
The Ospreys followed up their record opening round score with a second round 307 on Monday afternoon to finish with a 36-hole total of 602. UNF held a two-shot lead in the team competition after round one play.
"On a course we have not seen since last April, I am very proud of the way the team came out and played hard," said UNF head coach Joanne Steele. "We faced some adverse weather conditions today and they all persevered and played with confidence. The school record 295 in round one was an exceptional way to start the tournament. Heading into the final round tomorrow, we must continue to play fearless and with confidence."
Sparking the strong team performance was sophomore Tess Huber, who fired a one-under 71 in first round play. It marked just the second under-par round in UNF program history and was a career-best for Huber.
UNF also got a career best score from sophomore Belinda George, who finished the morning wave with a one-over 73.
After day one competition, Huber is in third place at 145 (71-74) and joined in the Top 25 by freshman Lauren Coe, who is tied for 14th at 150 (75-75), and George in 25th at 153 (73-80). Rounding out the Osprey lineup were sophomores Emelie Alpe tied for 37th at 156 (76-80) and Kelly Aylwin in a tie for 39th at 157 (79-78). Additionally, freshman Nathalie Nygren made her debut for UNF competing as an individual and ending the day tied for 48th at 160 (79-81).
College of Charleston rallied with a second round 293 and moved to the top of the team standings at 590. The Ospreys are second followed by Stetson (604), Daytona State (606), Wofford (607), Troy (608), tournament host Jacksonville (609), High Point (614), Winthrop (616), College of Charleston "B"(630), Florida Atlantic (643) and USC Upstate (644).
FAU's Jacqueline Shelly owns a one-stroke advantage on the field in medalist competition after carding rounds of 70-73=143 (-1).
Tournament action concludes with a final round of 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
