DeLAND, Fla. – A tough two-game road trip begins for University of North Florida women's basketball on Saturday afternoon against Atlantic Sun leader Stetson at the Edmunds Center at 1 p.m.
UNF is one of four teams off to a 2-0 start in conference play. The Ospreys picked up a pair of home win against Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky earlier this week. However, UNF's next two games come against the top two teams in the A-Sun.
“There is no doubt that this weekend will test our abilities,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Right now, we are focused on what we have to do against Stetson tomorrow. They are a very talented team that can score from all five spots on the floor. We have to be strong and consistent on both ends of the court.”
Each of the last three games for the Ospreys has seen at least two UNF players with 10-or-more points. Most recently, against Northern Kentucky, junior Ki Conner tallied 17 points and sophomore Destinee Smith added 15. It was the fourth time Conner led the team in scoring this season. Meanwhile, Smith's been one of UNF's top scorers in the last three games, averaging 15.0 ppg.
Picked to win the 2013 A-Sun title, Stetson brings a five-game winning streak into the weekend and started conference play with wins against Kennesaw State and Mercer. The Hatters are the A-Sun's top-offensive team, leading the conference in scoring (68.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.436), 3-point field goal percentage (.352) and free throw percentage (.762). They have three of the top four field goal shooters in the league in Victoria McGowan, Jama Sharp and Cherisse Burris. The trio's combined to go 170-for-331 from the field and shoot 51.4 percent. McGowan and Sharp are also among the league's leaders in 3-point field goal percentage and McGowan, who was tabbed the A-Sun's Preseason Player of the Year, averages a conference-best 18.4 ppg.
The series between UNF and Stetson is tied at 7-7. Last year's series was split with each team winning on its home court. UNF's 59-56 win on Feb. 4, 2012 was the most recent result and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Hatters.
