JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The first of two SunTrust River City Rumbles this season for University of North Florida women's basketball takes place on Saturday afternoon when cross-town rival Jacksonville comes to UNF Arena at 2 p.m.
“There is nothing on our schedule that compares to JU week,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “It is a game that we want to win and we know that they put a lot of focus on as well. The last UNF-JU game was extremely close with us winning at the buzzer on their home court. We know JU wants this game and will come out tough and intense. We will have to play 40 minutes of solid defense and execute on the offensive side of the ball. This is our court and we have to protect it.”
The series between UNF and Jacksonville is tightly contested with the Dolphins holding a 9-7 advantage and outscoring UNF 53.5-51.4 ppg in the all-time series. However, UNF has won six of the last seven meetings and has outscored the Dolphins 52.9-46.0 ppg. The Ospreys have swept Jacksonville in both regular season games in each of the last two years.
A barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble standings will be at stake on Saturday afternoon. Heading to Friday night's game between the men's teams, UNF holds a 4.5-1.5 lead in the standings.
UNF aims to bounce back after a 56-43 setback to Mercer on Monday night. Jadhken Kerr and Raneisha Lamar each pulled down double-digit rebounds in the loss, marking just the fifth time in UNF's Division I history two players had 10-or-more boards.
The Ospreys have kept opponents from scoring a three-point bucket for the last 42:08. Mercer did not convert from long range on Monday – the second time in UNF's Division I era in which an opponent did not make a three. Kennesaw State's Ashley Holliday had the last trey made by an opponent at the 2:08 mark in the second half last Saturday. The last time an opponent was shutout from long range happned last year when Coastal Carolina missed all of its attempts at UNF Arena on Nov. 28, 2011. Ironically enough, UNF's next opponent after Coastal Carolina was Jacksonville.
Jacksonville snapped a three-game losing skid on Monday with a 64-52 win over Kennesaw State at Swisher Gymnasium, but the Dolphins have not won an away game since a 72-69 win at Jacksonville State on Nov. 25. A veteran team with nine juniors and seniors, Jacksonville ranks second in the Atlantic Sun in rebounds with 41.3 per game, while Jade Cargill's 8.7 rpg is second individually in the conference. Offensively, a trio of players average over 10 ppg in Cargill (12.0), Tracie Sneed (11.1) and Briona Brown (10.5), who was tabbed A-Sun Newcomer of the Week on Monday.
**Tickets for UNF basketball games are available at UNF Arena, online or by calling (904) 620-BIRD or by email at ospreytickets@unf.edu.
