JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball continues with its three-game homestand on Monday night when Mercer visits UNF Arena.
“Our defense has been improving each game and will have yet another big test tomorrow night,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Mercer is a very talented offensive team that can score from all five positions on the floor. We will need to be very solid defensively tomorrow night. Offensively, we need to continue to execute better and stay aggressive.”
UNF comes off a narrow 52-49 win over Kennesaw State on Saturday, which snapped a two-game losing skid. However, the Ospreys have won their last three home games at UNF Arena and are currently 6-1 on their home floor on the season. The Ospreys have limited opponents to just 54.7 ppg at UNF Arena this season.
Raneisha Lamar powered the Ospreys' offense against the Owls. Lamar picked up her third double-double of the season and the fifth of her career with 16 points and 10 rebounds. In the last UNF-Mercer game, Lamar was a key figure for the Ospreys' offense and defense, notching a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Mercer brings a two-game winning streak into Monday night's game. Both of those wins have come on the road with the Bears defeating Kennesaw State and Jacksonville and scoring 71 and 72 points in those games, respectively. In 14 of its 15 games, at least one Mercer player has reached double-figures in scoring. Precious Bridges ranks third in the Atlantic Sun with a 16.2 ppg average, while Kendra Grant is fifth with 12.3 ppg. However, in the Bears' 72-68 win at Jacksonville on Saturday, Ry'van Buchanan led Mercer over the Dolphins, dropping 32 points behind 13-for-15 shooting from the field. Bridges also added 22 points.
UNF holds a 10-5 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last four meetings. The Ospreys swept last year's series, winning 49-39 on Jan. 21 in Macon and then 66-49 on Feb. 16 in Jacksonville.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
