JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball starts a three-game homestand on when the Ospreys welcome Kennesaw State to UNF Arena for the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
“It is great to be back on our home floor for the next three games,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Kennesaw State is a talented team that is hungry for its first conference win of the season. We played with great effort against Florida Gulf Coast. We need to have that same intensity on the defensive end in this game as what we had at Florida Gulf Coast, but we need to execute better on the offensive end.”
The Ospreys attempt to break a two-game losing streak after coming off a pair of setbacks at Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. However, the Ospreys enter this three-game stretch 5-1 at home this season and 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun. Home court advantage has certainly played to the Ospreys' favor. Two Ospreys – Ki Conner and Fabiola Josil – average over 10.0 ppg when playing at UNF Arena.
Meanwhile, UNF brings a three-game streak of shooting 80.0 percent from the free throw line. The Ospreys have shot 77.1 percent (84-for-109) from the charity strip since shooting a season-low 27.3 percent from the line at Savannah State on Dec. 10.
Kennesaw State searches for its first A-Sun win and aims to snap a four-game losing streak. The Owls, who wrapped up a five-game homestand last Saturday against Mercer, enter the weekend averaging 44.3 ppg in conference games. However, Sametria Gideon is averaging a double-double on the season with 11.2 ppg and 10.5 rpg. Kristina Wells has a 10.2 ppg average.
The UNF-KSU series is the most played in Osprey history. The series dates back to both schools' Division II days with the first meeting being on Dec. 4, 1994. Kennesaw State holds an 18-14 advantage in the all-time series. Last year, the teams met three times. UNF captured both regular-season games, but the Owls eliminated the Ospreys in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament with a 51-49 win in Macon, Ga.
Tip off for Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m., and is followed by the UNF-KSU men's basketball game.
**Tickets for UNF basketball games are available at UNF Arena, online or by calling (904) 620-BIRD or by email at ospreytickets@unf.edu.
