Golf Tied for 6th After Day One of Carpet Capital

ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The University of North Florida men's golf team posted a first round three-over 291 and are tied for sixth in the Carpet Capital Collegiate held at The Farm Golf Club.
The Ospreys, who are making their 2012-13 season debut, were led on the opening day by sophomore MJ Maguire's two-under-par 70. Maguire closed the first round tied for eighth in the medalist competition.
Fellow sophomore Joey Petronio carded an even par 72 on Friday and is tied for 22nd while senior Kevin Phelan shot a two-over 74 (T-38). Freshman Joe Stepnes and redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock made their collegiate debuts for the Ospreys posting rounds of 75 (T-43) and 79 (T-68), respectively.
A trio of SEC schools lead the team competition after 18 holes of play with Georgia in front at 278. National runner-up Alabama is in second at 284 with LSU only two shot behind at 286. Wake Forest is fourth at 288 followed by Auburn (289), North Florida and North Carolina (291), Chattanooga (292), MTSU (292), Clemson (292), National Champion Texas (293), Kennesaw State (293), South Carolina (296), Tennessee (299) and tournament host Georgia Tech (301).
UGA's T.J. Mitchell tops the individual competition after firing an opening round 65 (-7).
Tournament action at the Carpet Capital continues with second round action Saturday. North Florida begins play from the first tee at 9:45 a.m. in a group with Wake Forest and Auburn. Fans can follow all the action online at www. golfstat.com.
