JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team heads to Riverside, Calif. for a pair of matches in the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational. The Ospreys open up the tournament against host UC Riverside on Friday night before taking on San Diego State in a match Sunday afternoon at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.
Due to the difference in time zones, the match against No. 25 UC Riverside will take place at 11:00 p.m. (ET), while the match with San Diego State is slated for 6:30 p.m. (ET). Live stats will be available for both matches.
North Florida enters the match 3-2-0 overall, winning back-to-back matches for the first time since October of 2009. This season the Ospreys have already tripled their win total from last season and nearly doubled their goals scored.
The Ospreys depth has shown in the early goings of the season with 16 different players earning multiple starts on the year. Seven different UNF players have scored goals this season with four players recording two goals apiece. In addition, seven different players have combined for North Florida's eight assists in the first five matches. Two different goalkeepers have both recorded victories on the season and the duo combined for a shutout. Currently, the Ospreys have scored more goals then they have allowed. The last time UNF finished a season with more goals scored than they allowed was 2003.
Max McDaniel and Jean Rivaroli lead the Ospreys with five points apiece. The duo has each scored a pair of goals on the year, while adding a helper apiece. Camilo Garcia and Mauricio Valderruten have both scored a pair of goals each for four points, while Alex Morrell has chipped in a goal and a team-best two assists for four points.
At goal, Brad Sienkiewicz and Kyle Nasta have combined for three wins, including a shutout victory. Sienkiewicz has seen the majority of minutes between the posts, earning four starts, but was sidelined because of an injury against Florida Atlantic, allowing Nasta to earn his first collegiate start at Georgia Southern. Sienkiewicz has allowed just seven goals, while making 22 stops. In two appearances, Nasta has blocked 15 shots, allowing just three goals.
UC Riverside, San Diego State and Nebraska Omaha are all in the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational. The Ospreys face off against the Highlanders and Aztecs, but will not face the Mavericks. Tournament-host UC Riverside is the only team in the invitational that North Florida has played before, falling to the Highlanders last season 2-0 in Jacksonville.
The trip to California will mark the third time since turning Division I that they Ospreys will travel to the West Coast. North Florida competed in the UC Irvine College Classic in 2005 and 2008.
Scouting the Opposition:
UC Riverside: For the first time in the 12-year Division I history of the program, the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team is ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The honor came just two days after the Highlanders ran their record to a perfect 5-0-0 with a 4-3 win on the road at UNLV. College Soccer News tabbed UCR as the 30th ranked team in the nation in their weekly poll.
San Diego State: After a brief stint at home, San Diego State leaves Montezuma Mesa this week for a pair of games in the Inland Empire as it is set to face Nebraska Omaha and North Florida at the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational in Riverside, Calif. SDSU is coming off a .500 weekend after beating Houston Baptist, 3-2, and falling to Ohio State, 2-1, at its own Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament. San Diego State's win over HBU was played before Montezuma Road-record 2,212 fans and marked the program's first night game at SDSU Sports Deck.
