JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team is set to host a pair of matches over the weekend at Hodges Stadium. The Ospreys welcome FIU to Jacksonville on Friday night in the second match of a doubleheader with the UNF women's soccer team. The match with the Panthers is slated for 8:30 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, the men's team squares off against Florida Atlantic in the second match of another doubleheader slated for 3:30 p.m.
Live stats will be available for both matches. In addition, each match can be seen on ASun.TV for FREE.
North Florida enters the weekend after taking second in the inaugural Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament. The Ospreys opened the 2012 season with a 4-2 victory over Siena at Hodges Stadium. UNF faltered against tournament champion Georgia State, 3-1, in the championship match.
The Ospreys scored five goals on the weekend with five different players scoring. Jean Rivaroli and Alex Morrell led all UNF players with three points apiece on the weekend, while Camilo Garcia, Teddy Mulamba and Mauricio Valderruten chipped in two points each.
For his efforts, Rivaroli was tabbed Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week. The true freshman was instrumental in the Ospreys opening-match victory over Siena. Rivaroli scored the first goal of the season for North Florida, giving UNF an early lead against the Saints. Siena rallied to take a 2-1 lead, but with the score knotted at 2-2, Rivaroli sent a cross through the right side that was headed into the bottom right corner of the goal by Teddy Mulamba. The goal proved to be the match-winner as the UNF defense shut down the Saints offense.
Rivaroli, Jake Frahm and Brad Sienkiewicz were named to the Mike Gibbs Memorial All-Tournament team. Sienkiewicz boasted four saves in the match, but took the loss surrendering three goals. The transfer had two saves in each half, including an acrobatic stop in the first stanza. Sienkiewicz earned the victory over Siena on Friday night with four saves in the match to earn All-Tournament accolades.
The four goals scored in Friday's match against Siena was the most scored in the Derek Marinatos Era and tied for the second most goals scored in a match since North Florida turned Division I in 2005. The last time the Ospreys scored four goals in a match was on Oct. 25, 2008 when UNF notched a 4-2 victory against USC Upstate. North Florida defeated Palm Beach Atlantic, 5-0, on Oct. 30, 2006 for the most goals scored in a match since turning DI.
North Florida has squared off against FIU and Florida Atlantic a combined five times. FIU took a 2-1 victory over the Ospreys last season in the only meeting between the two teams down in Miami. FAU holds a 4-0 advantage in the series winning two matches in Boca Raton and a pair in Jacksonville. All four matches were decided by one goal.
FIU is 1-0 on the season after defeating Bryant University, 2-0 in the Panthers' season opener to give first-year head coach Kenny Arena his first career victory. Forward Quentin Albrecht scored two goals for the second time in his FIU career, while Lucas Di Croce, Chris Lamarre and Nicolas Rodriguez each added an assist. Goalkeeper Robin Spiegel was perfect between the pipes with three saves in his first-career shutout and victory at FIU.
Florida Atlantic enters the weekend 0-1 after falling to UCF in the season opener. The scheduled men's soccer match between FAU and Bryant for Sunday morning was called during warmups due to weather. With both teams on the field preparing for a 10 a.m. start, high winds and rain forced the postponement. No makeup date has yet been announced. The Owls play Jacksonville on Friday, Aug. 31, at 8:30 p.m., before taking on North Florida two days later.
