JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns to action with a pair of midweek contests against in-state opponents. The Ospreys open up the week on the road Tuesday night (7:00 p.m.) against No. 5 Florida before returning home to face off against USF on Wednesday night (6:00 p.m.) at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
Live stats, live audio and in-game Tweets (@UNFOspreys) will be available for both games. Robert Harper will handle the play-by-play for the Florida game on www.wbobradio.com.
The Ospreys enter the week with a 28-20 overall record after claiming an Atlantic Sun Conference road series with Belmont. After dropping the series opener, 6-1, North Florida bounced back for a pair of victories. UNF tied the series with a 4-1 win behind Kyle Westwood's complete game. Ryan Roberson hit what proved to be the game-winning home run in the rubber match on Sunday to help the Ospreys to a 6-2 series clinching victory.
UNF is currently 15-8 overall at home and 13-12 on the road.
North Florida won the previous meetings this season between Florida and USF.
The Ospreys scored 10 runs on 13 hits to upset the then No. 1 Florida Gators, 10-5, on Tuesday, April 3 at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,144. With the win, the Ospreys tied the all-time series at 5-5 and improved to 3-0 over the Gators in the city of Jacksonville. North Florida was the first unranked team to defeat Florida this season.
In the first midweek game of the season, the UNF baseball team used 18 hits and solid performances on the mound to claim a 9-1 victory over in-state rival South Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Tampa at the USF Baseball Stadium. The win evened the all-time series between the two schools at 5-5.
Scouting the Opposition:
Florida: The University of Florida enters the midweek game after claiming an important road series win over No. 6 Kentucky in Lexington. For his efforts, second baseman Casey Turgeon was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday for the first time. The No. 5 Gators return to action on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to face North Florida at McKethan Stadium. Freshman right-hander Johnny Magliozzi will draw the start against the Ospreys.
USF: The Bulls certainly made first-place St. John's sweat in a series that was decided in the final at-bat Sunday afternoon in New York. Frank Schwindel's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth helped the Red Storm escape with a 5-4 victory after USF scored two runs in the top half of the inning to tie the game. USF now trails the Red Storm by three games atop the Big East standings after what shaped up to be nail-biter in the late innings of the series finale.
