Baseball Continues Road Trip at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida baseball team continues its week-long road trip with a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Belmont. The series begins on Friday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. (ET) and continues on Saturday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. (ET). The two teams conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
North Florida enters the weekend with a 26-19 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Belmont is 28-17 overall and 12-6 in league play. The Bruins enter the weekend in second place in the conference, while the Ospreys are in eighth place. The top six teams advance to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in DeLand, Fla. later this month.
The Ospreys own a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series. UNF have won the last three games in the series and five of the last seven games between the two teams. North Florida is 8-2 against Belmont in Jacksonville, but 2-6 against the Bruins away from home.
Last season, UNF swept the three-game series in Jacksonville. The Ospreys opened up the series with a 5-4 victory. The next day, North Florida routed Belmont, 22-2 to claim the series. UNF completed the sweep with a 17-9 win in the series finale.
The last time the two teams met in Nashville, North Florida and Belmont played a doubleheader at Lipscomb's Ken Dugan Field because of flooding in Nashville. The Bruins swept the shortened series with a 4-1 victory and a 15-9 win.
The Ospreys enter the weekend after splitting a two-game nonconference road series with The Citatdel.
Starting pitcher Tommy Organ worked 5.2 innings, striking out a career-high nine batters as North Florida earned a 6-3 victory over The Citadel on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park
On the mound, the North Florida pitching staff scattered six hits and allowed just three runs with only two earned runs. The pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, paced by Organ's career-high nine. Organ surrendered four hits in 5.2 innings of work with no walks. Trey Ferrano and Nick Allbritton combined to work the next 2.1 innings, allowing two runs – one earned run – on a pair of hits. The duo each recorded a strikeout while allowing a walk. Chandler Jagodzinski picked up his third save of the season, tossing the final inning. He faced the minimum, striking out one.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored six runs on seven hits. Six different UNF batters recorded hits on the night with Joe Wielbruda notching a pair of base knocks. Andrew Karmeris made his one hit count with a three-run home run that proved to be the game-winning hit. Tyler Marincov and Ryan Roberson each added doubles in the game. A. Karmeris was hit by a pitch and also drew a pair of walks, including an intentional walk to reach base four times in the game. He led all UNF batters with two runs scored and three RBI.
The baseball team fell 5-1 to The Citadel in nonconference action on the road on Wednesday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The Ospreys surrendered three runs early and were unable to rally for the win.
Offensively, North Florida collected six hits, led by Ryan Roberson who collected a pair of base knocks. Tyler Marincov and Spencer Herrmann each added doubles in the game. Joe Wielbruda singled and scored the Ospreys' only run of the game. Drew Weeks also garnered a hit for UNF.
On the mound, Spencer Herrmann earned the start. The lefty worked 2.2 innings, surrendering four hits and being charged with three runs. The freshman walked two while striking out one. Herrmann was relieved by Ryan McMahon. McMahon surrendered a pair of base hits before allowing Evan Stermer to enter the game. Stermer tossed 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout to his credit. Evan Incinelli came in to pitch in relief. Incinelli worked the next 2.1 innings, scattering three hits. He allowed one run with a strikeout and no walks. Jamie Cardwell worked the final 1.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout to his credit.
Scouting the Opposition:
This weekend marks the first Atlantic Sun Conference home games for the Belmont baseball team since sweeping USC Upstate in early April.
Due to Florida Gulf Coast's sweep of Kennesaw State during Belmont's weekend off, the Bruins are now by themselves in second place in the league standings with a mark of 12-6. BU's pitching staff was once again superb on Wednesday night, allowing just one unearned run to improve the team ERA to 3.29.
