PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – No. 10/13 ranked University of North Florida golf team carded a 291 (+7) Wednesday and moved up into a tie for fourth after second round play at the 2012 NCAA Golf Championship being held at historic Riviera Country Club.
Playing in the day's morning wave, the Ospreys posted their score early and watched as their two-day tally of 581 just got better and better on the scoreboard. UNF left the course in 14th place but ended the round tied with Oklahoma in fourth place, just one stroke behind third place Florida State.
Junior Kevin Phelan continued his solid play in leading the Ospreys firing an even par 71 in round two. Phelan is currently tied for 10th in the medalist competition with a 36-hole total of 143 (+1). Senior Kevin Aylwin also posted an even par round Wednesday and is tied for 27th at 145 (+3).
Junior All-American candidate Sean Dale bounced back on day two finishing with a two-over 73 and currently ranks tied for 85th at 150. Freshman MJ Maguire, UNF's day one leader, shot a 78 while fellow freshman Joey Petronio finished with a 76 to round out the Osprey lineup. North Florida's rookie duo is tied for 69th at 149.
“We played a really solid round today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “There just were any low scores to be had on the course today and we did a good job of battling and keeping ourselves in the hunt. The Kevins (Phelan and Aylwin) both posted strong rounds and the rest of the squad grinded it out. The leaderboard is extremely bunched, so we need to go out and play well in this final round of stroke play.”
The Ospreys continued to feast on the par-five opening hole boasting a combined score of four-under for the day. UNF went seven-under in the opening round and have now played Hole No. 1 in a combined 11-under as a team through two rounds.
Alabama leads the team competition with a two-day score of 572 with UCLA currently in second just four shots behind at 576. FSU is third trailed by UNF and Oklahoma, then Washington is in sixth at 582 followed by Liberty in seventh (583) and five teams tied for eighth at 584 including California, Kent State, Florida, Southern California and Illinois. Top-ranked Texas and No. 7 Oregon are only one shot further back in a tie for 13th.
The Illini's Thomas Peters posted his second straight round under par to move atop the medalist rankings with a two round score of 137 (-5).
Stroke play concludes Thursday on the par 71, 7,292 yard layout of Riviera CC with North Florida returning to the course at 12:20 p.m. (PT) on hole No. 1 along with playing partners Oklahoma and Washington. The top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play advance to seeded match-play competition beginning Friday.
