JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns to Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against crosstown rival Jacksonville in the final 2012 installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble. The series is slated for Thursday (6:00 p.m.), Friday (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Harmon Stadium.
Saturday will serve as Senior Day for the Ospreys five seniors – T.J. Gavlik, Chandler Jagodzinski, Andrew Karmeris, Evan Stermer and Michael Wesner – with festivities taking place prior to first pitch. In addition, the first 200 fans for Saturday's game will receive ice cream served in a North Florida souvenir batting helmet.
The three games against JU will count towards the final SunTrust River City Rumble standings. Earlier this year, the North Florida men's golf team secured the Old Wooden Barrel for the Ospreys with their victory in the Atlantic Sun Championship. UNF claimed the Barrel during the 2006-07 season, defeating JU 11-9. The Ospreys retained the Barrel in 2007-08 as the two teams tied 10-10 in the standings. This season, North Florida currently leads 11-6 in the overall standings.
Jacksonville holds a 28-14 (.667) advantage in the all-time series between the two schools. The Dolphins are 15-5 (.750) against the Ospreys in Harmon Stadium. North Florida is 15-8 (.652) overall this season at Harmon Stadium, posting the 23rd winnings season at home in the program's 25-year history.
Last season, the Ospreys dropped the three-game series with the Dolphins, 2-1. JU opened the series with a 6-4 victory at John Sessions Stadium. The second game in the series was held at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville with the Dolphins taking a 5-2 win to clinch the series. In the final game of the series, North Florida edged out Jacksonville, 9-8, to prevent the sweep.
The last time UNF hosted JU, North Florida won the series 2-1. The Ospreys dropped the first game 13-10 at Harmon Stadium. Game two was played at the Baseball Grounds with UNF shutting out JU, 2-0. In the rubber match between the two schools, the Ospreys earned the series victory with a 4-3 win at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys will need a sweep in order to keep their A-Sun Tournament hopes alive. In order for North Florida to advance to the A-Sun Tournament, the Ospreys will have to sweep the Dolphins; Stetson will have to sweep Florida Gulf Coast; and USC Upstate will have to sweep Mercer. The games between the Hatters and Eagles are in DeLand, while the Spartans travel to Macon to face the Bears. Since going Division I in 2006, there has been only one sweep in the series between UNF and JU. Jacksonville swept North Florida at Harmon Stadium during the 2006 season.
Scouting the Opposition:
The Dolphins are eliminated for postseason contention but can play spoiler this week as the Ospreys need to win the series to stay in the hunt for an A-Sun Tournament berth. A four-run ninth inning by Lipscomb on May 11 secured a 7-6 come-from-behind win over the Dolphins and end JU's postseason changes. The Bisons swept the Dolphins in a doubleheader the next day to take the series.
Despite the losses, junior Adam Brett Walker II hit a homer in the first two games to bring his career total to 40, three shy of tying the JU program record. Junior Dan Gulbransen has recorded a hit in the last 10 A-Sun games, including five straight multi-hit contests.
