CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis makes its second NCAA Division I Tournament appearance on Friday when the Ospreys take on Miami – the No. 10 national seed – in the opening round of the NCAA Coral Gables Regional at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 1 p.m. As host, Miami is the regional's No. 1 seed, while UNF is the No. 4 seed.
It will be the second meeting this season between the Ospreys and the Hurricanes. The two teams met on Mar. 3 with Miami, who was ranked 10th at the time, defeating the Ospreys 7-0. Although UNF did not register a team point, the Ospreys won at No. 1 doubles with Lorena Aviles and Aline Berkenbrock posting an 8-5 win over Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmerman.
Since the loss to Miami, UNF has put together an impressive 14-1 record and enters Friday riding a 12-match winning streak. The Ospreys have outscored their opponents 86-15 in the last 15 matches.
Several players bring winning streaks into the NCAA Tournament. Aviles and Berkenbrock, who are ranked No. 70 nationally in doubles, have won their last 11 matches and are 15-3 at No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, Melanie Aguirre and Danielle Day are riding a 13-match winning streak and are 13-3 overall on the season and perfect 13-0 at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Aviles has won her last 13 matches en route to a 15-2 record and a 12-1 No. 2 singles mark this single. Marina Cunningham has taken her last eight matches, while Berkenbrock has won nine of her last 10 singles matches.
During the Atlantic Sun Tournament, Danielle Day and Simona Weymar each had the match-clinching team points. Day's three-match No. 3 singles thriller lifted UNF to a 4-2 win over Stetson in the semifinals. In the conference championship match with ETSU, it took Weymar three sets to win her No. 5 singles match and give UNF its second A-Sun title in three years and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Miami enters the weekend with an 18-4 overall record and is a perfect 14-0 at home. The Hurricanes have played 17 matches against ranked opponents this season. All of Miami's last seven opponents have been ranked. During the 2012 spring season, the Hurricanes were ranked as high as No. 5.
The Hurricanes put together a 14-match winning streak for much of the season, but have gone just 2-3 in their last five matches. Miami is coming off a 4-3 loss to then-No. 25 Georgia Tech in the ACC quarterfinals. The Hurricanes swept the doubles competition, but only got wins from Anna Bartentsein and Bolivar in the singles play.
