MACON, Ga. – One run was the difference in both games of University of North Florida softball's doubleheader at Mercer as the Ospreys split the Saturday's games with the Bears at Sikes Field. Mercer won the first game 3-2, but UNF rebounded in Game Two with a 2-1 win.
In Game One, Mercer capitalized on an UNF error and scored a pair of runs to go up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. However, UNF took advantage of a Mercer miscue in the fifth inning. The Bears' error allowed both Jackie Reese and Kaley Brosky to score and make it a 2-2 game.
UNF and Mercer remained tied a 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Caitlin Peisel scored the game-winner on a Kassie Bailey single.
Kaylie Wallace received the loss after giving up three runs – only one that was earned – off six hits in 6.2 innings. Wallace also had four strikeouts.
Kassie Bailey pitched all 7.0 innings in the win. Bailey allowed two unearned runs off six hits and also fanned eight batters.
In Game Two, UNF jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A bases loaded wild pitch allowed Brosky to score the game's first run.
The Ospreys added another run in the second inning when Kelly Dill scored on a Brosky single to left center, making it a 2-0 game.
Solid pitching and defensive play by the Ospreys kept Mercer scoreless and limited to just two hits through the first four innings. Mercer's only run of the game came on a bases loaded hit by a pitch in the fifth inning.
Kayla Goff pitched the first 4.1 innings en route to getting the win. Goff allowed one unearned run off three hits and struck out three batters. Ashley Brown was credited with the save after coming in for the final 2.2 innings. Brown allowed only one hit and struck out three.
Jessica Holsinger received the loss after pitching all 7.0 innings. Holsinger allowed two runs – one earned – off five hits and struck out seven.
UNF returns to action on Wednesday with a mid-week doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 2 p.m.
