JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 52 University of North Florida men's tennis clinched a spot in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championships with a 4-0 win over Lipscomb on Saturday during Senior Day at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Saturday's match was also the home finale for UNF's only senior, Graham Edgar, who wraps up a four-year career with the Ospreys this spring.
“Graham's made tremendous contributions to UNF and the men's tennis program throughout his entire time here,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “I am very proud at what he's accomplished – both academically and athletically. Graham's wins at both doubles and singles was just the perfect touch to Senior Day.”
UNF got the day started by taking the doubles point. Norbert Nemcsek and Daniel Sotomarino cruised to an 8-1 win over Oliver Strecker and Miguel Cortez at No. 1 doubles. Mortiz Buerchner and Edgar sealed the doubles point with an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win against Daniel Hernandez and Stuart Tierney.
Lipscomb avoided getting swept at doubles with David Salazar and Colby Shaw edging out Leonardo Nahar and Pedro Davisson 8-7 (6) at the No. 3 spot.
Only No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles were completed in the match, which was being played to the first to four points. Davisson captured a 6-1, 6-1 No. 4 singles win against Shaw, while Nahar posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Cortez at No. 5 singles. Edgar cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tierney at No. 6 singles.
UNF concludes the regular-season next weekend with two matches. The Ospreys begin their road trip at Kennesaw State on Friday at 4 p.m.
