JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball hits the road this weekend for a pair of Atlantic Sun doubleheaders in Georgia this weekend. The Ospreys open the road trip on Friday at Kennesaw State and then conclude the weekend at Mercer on Saturday.
UNF is coming off a 3-1 showing during last weekend's series with Lipscomb and Belmont. The Ospreys split the series with Lipscomb last Friday, earning a 1-0 win in Game One before falling 5-4 in the second game. UNF finished up last weekend with a series sweep of Belmont, downing the Bruins 5-4 in the first game and then 8-0 in a six-inning, run-rule game.
Kennesaw State comes off a 6-3 loss to Georgia Tech on Wednesday. The Owls, who are 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun, host their first conference games this weekend, but Kennesaw State is just 3-5 at Bailey Park this season. In last weekend's A-Sun series, Kennesaw State swept ETSU and then split with USC Upstate. Jessica Cross enters the weekend batting a team-best .376 (44-for-117). Sharon Swanson is tied for second in the A-Sun with 11 homers and is tied for third in the conference with 27 RBI. Swanson and Bianca Durant each have a team-leading eight doubles.
Friday night's games between UNF and Kennesaw State will be the 45th and 46th meetings between the two teams. It is the second-most played series in UNF's history and the two teams have met at least twice a season every year since 1998. The Owls lead the series 34-10. Both schools went Division I in 2006 and Kennesaw State has won 13 of 14 games since then.
Mercer enters the weekend winners of 10 of its last 11 games. The Bears' only setback during that stretch was an 8-7 loss at USC Upstate in Game One of a Mar. 30 doubleheader. The Bears are coming off a doubleheader sweep of ETSU on Mar. 31 and will host Jacksonville on Apr. 6. McKenzie Woody is batting a team-best .450 and is one of the nation's top hitters. Woody has 54 hits on the season. Kassie Bailey (26), Kristin Marko (24), Sarah Santana (23) and Sara Stukes (21) all have over 20 RBI for the season, while Tiffany Phillips has 19. In the circle, Jessica Holsinger has a 1.98 ERA in 95.2 innings and has appeared in 19 of Mercer's games. She also has 82 strikeouts on the season.
The series between UNF and Mercer is tied at 6-6. The two teams first met in 2006. Ever since that first season, UNF and Mercer have split the series in four of the six seasons. The only sweeps to occur in the series took place at Mercer. UNF won both games in 2007, while the Bears won two in 2010.
First pitch of UNF's doubleheader at Kennesaw State is set for 4 p.m., with live stats and live video being available. Meanwhile, first pitch of Saturday's UNF-Mercer doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m., with live stats being available for that twinbill.
