
Softball Tripped Up By JU on Senior Night

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball dropped a pair of games to cross-town rival Jacksonville on Friday evening during Senior Night at the UNF Softball Complex. The Ospreys fell 4-2 in Game One and then 5-1 in Game Two.
In the first game, JU got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Sarah Simon sent a two-run hit through the right side. The Dolphins then added two more runs in the top half of the fifth. With two outs, Karson Tuck had an RBI single to right field that drove in Amanda Schmidt from second. Then Ashley Simon scored on a wild pitch to put JU up 4-0.
However, UNF answered in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs to cut the Dolphins' lead in half. Chie Someya had a two-out single that fell just beyond second base and brought home Jackie Reese and Alyson Bailey and made it a 4-2 game.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the loss after allowing four runs off eight hits in 5.0 innings. Wallace also had four strikeouts.
Sarah Sigrest pitched the first 5.1 innings in the win for the Dolphins, giving up two runs off nine hits. She also struck out four. Brittany Eppley picked up her first save of the season after coming in for the final 1.2 innings. Eppley fanned five batters and allowed just one hit.
From the plate, Someya, Reese and Lauren Pollack each registered two hits for the Ospreys. Tuck, Sarah Simon and Kayla Ouellet all had two hits for JU.
In Game Two, UNF and JU were scoreless through the first three innings. The Dolphins broke the tie in the top of the fourth. Sarah Simon drove in the game's first run with a bases loaded single through the left side, while Jacey Warner's bases loaded groundout brought home another to make it a 2-0 game.
JU added to its lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Warner beat out the throw to the plate as JU went up 3-0. In the next at-bat, Schmidt was hit by a pitch, advancing home Ronnie Gajownik. Then later, with two outs and the bases loaded, Tuck sent an RBI single up the middle that put the Dolphins ahead 5-0.
UNF attempted to cut into JU's lead in the bottom half of the seventh and got one run when Kaley Brosky's single brought home Kelly Dill. However, that was the closest UNF could get.
Ashley Brown had the loss after allowed two runs off 4.0 innings. She also recorded one strikeout.
Eppley pitched all 7.0 innings in order to get the win, giving up one run off seven hits and striking out seven.
Brosky and Danica Mandarano each tallied two hits for UNF, while Ouellet and Schmidt also had two for the Dolphins.
Prior to Friday's doubleheader, the Ospreys recognized their five seniors – Bailey, Brosky, Dill, Richelle Raley and Someya – for their contributions to UNF's softball program.
Due to exams, UNF has a week-and-a-half break before its next game. The Ospreys host Florida State in a single game on Tuesday, May 1 at 5 p.m., at the UNF Softball Complex.
