JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball finished the home portion of its 2012 schedule with a pair of losses to No. 20 Florida State, falling 8-1 in the first game and 5-0 in the second at the UNF Softball Complex on Tuesday.
Errors plagued the Ospreys in the first game. After three scoreless innings, UNF committed three costly miscues in the top of the fourth that allowed Florida State to go up 4-0.
The Seminoles added to their lead in the sixth when Mallory Borden scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0. Florida State's final three runs came in the seventh as Courtney Senas had a one-out, solo shot to left field, Kirstin Austin scored on a wild pitch and Morgan Bullock sent a bases loaded single up the middle.
However, UNF got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and two runners on base, Richelle Raley ripped a single down the right field line that drove in Danica Mandarano.
Monica Perry had the win for Florida State after allowing one unearned run off four hits in 7.0 innings. Perry also struck out six in the complete game.
Cortney Radke was credited with the loss after 5.0 innings of work. Radke gave up five runs – two earned – and nine hits, while striking out three batters.
In Game Two, Florida State got one run in both the second and third innings to go up 2-0. Senas scored in the second on an Erika Leonard single up the middle, while the Seminoles capitalized on a UNF miscue in the third to score Tiffani Brown.
The remainder of Florida State's runs came in the fifth as the Seminoles had an RBI-double and two RBI singles in three-straight at-bats.
Lacey Waldrop received the win for the Seminoles after keeping UNF to just two hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings.
Kaylie Wallace had the loss after allowing five runs – three earned – off five hits in 5.0 innings. Wallace fanned two batters.
UNF concludes the regular season with a critical Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 5 p.m.
